Personal History
| Personal History | Elliana Avranos was born on Cinco De Mayo 2368 in Mexico City, the only child of Helios and Helena Avranos. Elliana had a steady early life, often visiting her father's home and family in Piraeus, Greece. However, when Elliana was seven years old, her father walked out. With her father's disappearance, Elliana and her mother lost almost everything. Helena wound up taking a job for a "friend" (whom, later in life, Elliana would find out was one of Mexico City's most notorious pimps) as a lady of the night to support herself and her daughter. Five years laters, when Elliana was twelve, her mother fell ill from a sexually transmitted disease. Elliana wound up dropping out of school to care for her mother. With Helena sick and unable to work, the "friend" threatened to stop supporting the family and let nature take its course with them. Unable to bear the thought of losing the precious few things they had left, Elliana volunteered to work in her mother's stead while Helena recovered. When Elliana was fourteen, she was sent Guadalajara for work. It was here that she met a street urchin her age named Tristana. (When Elliana kept pressing the issue of "Tristana Who", Tristana brushed it of as "not important," leading to Elliana referring to her as "Tristana no es importante", meaning "Tristana not important") Despite having been working for two years at that time, Elliana was still shy and timid when working with clients. Tristana taught her to become more confident with her body, and even helped coin a hot new nickname for Elliana, shortening it to just "El." And the two become good friends. In fact, it was Tristana (who worked as more of a "freelancer") who first pointed out that Elliana and her mother were working for a pimp, and make Elliana question for the first time her place in the bigger scheme of things. However, as Elliana was still under eighteen, there was little recourse that she could do for herself. However, things came to a head on Elliana's eighteenth birthday, when she finally gathered the courage to confront her pimp and tell him she wasn't going to work for him anymore. Enraged, the pimp threatened Helena's life in an attempt to blackmail Elliana to keep working for him. However, Elliana was unfazed by the threats. Her mother had constantly stressed to her that she wanted something better for her daughter, and understood that they might not be able to stay together to make that happen. With a little bit of help from Tristana, Elliana made a run for it. She didn't quite know where she was going, she just knew to go north as quickly as she could. Elliana never knew what became of her mother from the last time she saw her, and honestly, Elliana felt she was better off not knowing. Elliana eventually found herself in San Francisco. Overstimulated in an unfamiliar city, Elliana reverted back to the only thing she knew: Working street corners late at night, pulling favors for the local populace. However, that all changed when her services were "hired" by an off duty Starfleet officer. Rather than go about business as usual, however, the Andorian man just wanted to talk: He had seen Elliana a few times before, and felt that she was wasting her potential. Elliana was asked that night if she had ever considered joining Starfleet. Having never heard of Starfleet in her life until she had arrived in San Francisco, Elliana was given the pitch, and she was taken: This was the better life that her mother had wanted for her, and before they parted ways, Elliana was furnished with a list of all the Starfleet recruiting offices in the city. The very next morning, Elliana showed up to enlist. Since she had dropped out of school at such a young age, she figured an officer commission was out of reach. After being taught the basics, and slight specializations in Security, Elliana was shipped off to the USS Barcelona. The Barcelona was old refit Constitution class, but it didn't matter to Elliana. After such a traumatic youth, even the oldest and most derelict of starships felt like a fresh start. Elliana was placed on brig duty. A job which the young Mexican woman excelled at. And soon, she began to rotate between brig and armory duty. After about two years of service on the Barcelona, the Chief of Security pulled Elliana aside one day and asked her if she would be interested in an officer candidacy. Elliana was shocked, and thought that officer commissions were only for those who bothered to get an education. The Chief of Security then said that there were more ways to get an officer commission than that, and Elliana was furnished with an information packet on Starfleet's Officer Candidacy Program, being told to think it over. It took Elliana a great deal of soul searching to decide if she was ready, but she eventually decided that she would pursue an officer candidacy. As the Barcelona wasn't one of the frontline ships, Elliana wouldn't be needed to remain on board, so she shipped off back to Earth, returning to Starfleet Academy to attend her officer candidacy courses. While back at Starfleet Academy, Elliana ran into an old friend from Mexico: Tristana. While at first, Elliana was excited to find out who "Tristana no es importante" really was, Elliana would be in for disappointment. For somehow, Tristana had gotten away with not providing any sort of family name, and as such, her personnel file was listed as just Tristana. Regardless, it was good to reconnect with Tristana. Following the completion of her officer candidacy program, Elliana returned to the Barcelona, this time holding the rank of Ensign. Seeing her friend off, Tristana told Elliana that her mother would be proud of how far she'd come. |
