Mission:
The Breen
Location: USS Myogi (NCC-65918)- Five Forward, Deck 5
Timeline: March 15, 2397
Previously, on Star Trek: Myogi:
"No, no, she's not dead," Chisato assured him. "The fact of the matter is that she's got a 14-year-old daughter and a husband who's 14 years behind on the times, so that's at least two dependents she's now gotta juggle in addition to her preexisting duties. I mean, she could have opted to stay on the Tokyo, yes, but you saw just how unstable she was back in the Karlax Nebula? She's a strong woman, I'll give her that, but to lose her family now of all times would send her right off the edge, and I think even she acknowledged that."
And now, the continuation:
"Can't say I blame her. If my entire family were wiped out and only I was left, I couldn't promise that I would remain level-headed and thank their murderers profusely." Chrirhc said. "So, Colonel Shimada is out of the picture, then. If I recall correctly, she was third in line for command behind Captain Aisaka and Commander Johnson... So, how does this relate to those tests Captain Aisaka made you take?"
"Well, at first... nothing at all," Chisato Admitted. "As Captain Aisaka stated, she needed someone to fill in as an auxiliary Second Officer in the event she were to go into labor, which is... coming up, admittedly? But then all of this suddenly hit the fan, and next thing I know, my role as auxiliary 2XO has been boosted to becoming full-time 2XO..."
"And there it is!" Chrirhc declared, finally getting the admission that he was looking for. "You've been promoted to 2XO and have no idea what to do about it. If that's what was bothering you, I could have told you to speak with Commander Takahashi while you're with us. Myogi's command structure is different than the average Starfleet vessel, and because of that Commander Takahashi might have a few pointers you might not have even considered."
"Whoa, hold up- that's what you were getting from all this?" Chisato replied. "Not the fact that I'm deeply reluctant to be assuming any leadership responsibilities outside of my own department, but rather that I apparently need pointers to be a good little Commanding Officer?"
"You dealt with Klingons in the Karlax Nebula, yes?" Chrirhc asked. "Surely, you'd know this quote from Kahless; 'great men do not seek power, they have power thrust upon them.' From my layman's perspective, it seems that is exactly what has transpired."
Chisato was about to respond when the doors to the lounge opened and Kael entered, much to Chrirhc's eminent chagrin.
Kael fanned himself dryly with a PADD he was holding. His lips moved on their own as he looked at the people who were present and knew exactly what to recite. "The wind does not announce its direction, yet scatters seeds to common ground" He tucked his PADD under his arm and moved further into the lounge. "Commander Nishikigi. Good evening. I see you've found the most important facility on the Myogi"
"Well..." Chisato gazed about the lounge in its... gloomy state. "It's certainly seen better days..."
"I hear debates among some of the long time crew if whether or not what Captain Takahashi did was the right thing to do:" Chrirhc added. "Apparently, there was a renovation job that got on her bad side, and so, when the ship took a hit in this area, Captain Takahashi took advantage and had the space restored to its pre-renovation specs."
"That sounds... kinda spiteful?" Chisato remarked, evidently lacking the context for what had happened. "I mean, unless the lounge was painted in hot pink or something gaudy like that?"
"Well, what I found in the construction order called for the removal of so-called 'unsafe structures' that had been built." Chrirhc shrugged. "Whatever was built, though, it's long gone now. That construction order was quite old."
...
"...Yeah, hopefully no disrespect to your Captain, but that sounds like a bit of a penis move to me," Chisato admitted truthfully.
"I didn't take it personally." Alisha said from where she was sitting within earshot of them, finally comfortable in the flightsuit that she'd been getting used to since transferring to the Flight Operations. She turned in her chair to glance at Chirhc and Chisato, "Just because I outfitted it with top of the line equipment and entertainment material and would have happily replaced it? What the Captain wanted was what she decided to get."
"Ouch," Chisato muttered before turning her attention over to Chrirhc. "Please tell me she's not treating you like that, Commander?"
"I didn't decide to close a space that had personal significance to Captain Takahashi and make it my personal concert venue." Chrirhc commented, turning to Alisha. "Let me put it this way, Miss Reno: Imagine how you would feel if Captain Takahashi evicted you and Lieutenant Sinclair from your quarters because she felt she needed a walk-in closet. Probably not the best example, but if she did something outrageous to the place where you and Lieutenant Sinclair got engaged, you would probably understand her feelings with what you did to the place where her husband popped the question."
Kael inclined his head slightly, as if that settled the matter. "And so the debate continues, the elusive perfect lounge remains out of reach"
Jane had been sitting with Alisha and joined in the conversation when Alisha had. “You make something of a fair point, Mr. Chihc,” she admitted, “but if she had such strong feelings for the space it hadn’t been clear, at least to us who were new to the ship at the time.” She sipped her drink, a nice synthehol white wine, and shrugged. “It’s in the past. Bygones and what-not.”
"Come to think of it... how long have you two been sitting over there?" Chisato asked, glancing curiously at Alisha and Jane.
"A while." Alisha remarked, "Does it really matter? But back to your point, I'd been invited to spruce up the lounge space after I asked if I could." She rolled her eyes, "Just because I arranged it so that I could perform there if I wanted to is beyond the point. I enjoy singing in front of people, I enjoy performing as well, which is why I've gotten back into acting as well."
"I take it acting is the reason why you kept this ship's Intel department down to just yourself and one other during your tenure as Chief Intelligence Officer?" Chrirhc asked. "Keep people from asking too many questions? It would be a smart move, for sure, and not one without precedent."
"Why I kept the ship's Intelligence department down to two?" Alisha lowered her cup slowly to rest on the table, "I'll send you the several requests for more personnel that I sent into HQ that went ignored or outright rejected. You can ask Captain Azalea Martine why she chose to not support Myogi's Intelligence department yourself, if you'd like." She nearly spat the name of the high-ranking Intelligence officer back at Chrirhc, "I needed at least two more people at a minimum, so I wish you better luck than I had in getting them."
"Well, that explains a lot." Chrirhc sighed. "Captain Martine is rather notorious in Starfleet Intelligence for being hard to talk to. It's a shame that you got stuck working for her. Perhaps things might have turned out differently if you worked for someone who responded to more than simply articles of impeachment."
"Alright alright," Jane said, putting her hand on Alisha's. Her fiancée had brought up Captain Martine, and these days that subject brought out the worst in her. "Captain Martine has regrettably done more harm than good to us over the years." Us. She chose that pronoun specifically. "It's hard to square that circle, truth be told. But it is what it is."
The pilot bristled, but calmed down visibly at the hand on hers. If it hadn't been for Martine, she wouldn't have been in that situation where... "Just want to meet her in a dark alley..." She inhaled deeply, then exhaled, "Now I don't have to deal with it anymore, being a pilot has it's advantages."
"Well, if it's any consolation..." Chrirhc offered. "As I hinted at earlier, Captain Martine has been suspended and is currently facing impeachment charges. Of course, with a whole war going on right now, I doubt she'll face any actual justice as long as this conflict drags on."
"Ugh... don't even get me started on Martine," Chisato grumbled. "Just thinking about her gives me a migraine..."
"Does someone need a hypo or a hug? My remit allows me to offer either or both," she quipped. Bree asked, approaching the group. She wasn't one to normally crash a group gathering but there appeared to be a serious discussion happening and Scott's curiosity got the better of her.
Alisha cupped her mug close in both hands and gave Bree a smile, "An alibi, perhaps? Just all commiserating over a particularly annoying Intelligence officer we all know of. You know her too, through me." The time she'd spent with the counselor had guaranteed that was true.
Amongst all thd chatter, the doors of the lounge and Kurumi entered. Clung to her arm as usual was Yaeka, whom was still getting used to the many areas on the ship. They wete becoming a more common sight in the lounge, apparently 'eating out' was helping build up Yaeka's confidence slowly and allowing her to build trust.
"I tell you, it's bad enough that the repairs have taken as long as they have..." Came the grumbling of Captain Takahashi as she entered the lounge with her husband and infant daughter in tow. "But to keep us here an extra two days? I can't be the only one thinking that every day we spend in the yard under repair is a day that we're not an asset to the fleet..."
"I agree." Keisuke replied. "Yard dogs dragging their feet can always be frustrating, but especially during wartime..."
From his spot, Chrirhc observed the high profile family that had just entered the lounge.
"Ooh, Commander;" He spoke in Chisato's direction. "You got that blanket of yours handy?
Chisato glanced over her shoulder and immediately understood what Chrirhc was on about:
"Well, I'll be darned, I totally forgot yesterday!" she chuckled as she reached into her tote bag and retrieved the blanket. "Excuse me for a sec..."
And with that, she got up and made her way over to the booth were Maho and Keisuke were presently getting themselves situated.
"-And then, add a screaming, pooping baby into the mix; and... Well, I think you get the idea." Maho sighed. "You ever wonder if my decision was the right one?"
"For fear of sounding too much like Counselor Scott, we all have difficult decisions to make, and..." Keisuke trailed off when he saw someone approaching.
"Excuse me, Captain Takahashi?"
Maho turned to find their new mission advisor standing next to her.
"Is there something I can do for you, Commander?" Maho asked.
"Ah, yes- well, no really," Chisato began. "Its just that Mister Chihc reminded me about something I had wanted to give you; would've gotten around to it after the briefing yesterday, but then Mister Chihc gave me the whole orientation, and it completely slipped my mind."
"Understandable. I had some business to attend to with Commander Ebisuzawa around the same time." Maho nodded.
Chisato reached over and scratched the back of her neck. "Equally understandable, especially considering what we're up against," she replied, evidently assuming it had something to do with tactics and not a voluntary command screening as had actually been the case. "But, anyways, before I get ahead of myself..."
She reached over and furnished the blanked before gently pressing it into Maho's hands.
"Word of mouth is that you husband recently had yourselves a little bundle of joy, so I figured it was only appropriate that I offer up my congrats," she explained, stealing a glance over at Kyoko. "I made two, as I wasn't sure whether you had a boy or a girl, but I can always offer you the other one if you need it as a backup."
"Have you considered offering it to Captain Beurling?" Maho asked. "Mister Chihc tells me the three of you previously served together?"
"You know, hadn't thought about that," Chisato remarked. "I guess I figured Colonel Shimada would've gotten her something..."
"Well, something to consider." Maho said, realizing she hadn't bothered to thank Chisato for the trouble she'd gone to. "Thank you, by the way, Commander... Did you, um...?" She motioned towards Kyoko's carrier.
Chisato's face lit up like a kid turned loose in a candy store, and Maho began to have an inkling that she may have made a mistake.
"Can I?!" she asked with wide-eyed enthusiasm.
"Just... Don't do anything rash..." Maho muttered. "I just got her to calm down..."
Chisato nodded in what should have been understanding, though for the life of Maho she couldn't tell whether or not this woman was actually paying attention- that whole "puppy dog" look in her eyes seemed to hint at the fact that the only words she was paying attention to was "play with my baby"- specifically in that firing order.
Inside the carrier lay the two month old Kyoko, cluelessly looking about, thumb in the corner of her mouth as the infant contemplated inserting the finger further into her oral cavity. Kyoko seemed to pause what she was doing as she took notice of the new face peering into her carrier.
"So cute!" Chisato guffawed with all the evident self-restraint of a twelve-year-old girl meeting someone's baby on the street. "Just look at those chubby cheeks!"
Kyoko had gone from deciding whether or not she wanted to stick her thumb further into her mouth to whether or not she should start screaming, especially since the stranger peering in was presently blocking all of Kyoko's views of her mother.
Evidently, the stranger didn't seem to notice (or, if she did, wasn't all that concerned) about obstructing her line of sight.
"I can't imagine this little angel has being costing you sleep, Captain?" Chisato remarked, stealing a glance at Maho.
"You have no idea..." Maho sighed. "But, while I can't tell you how I do it, because trade secrets, I will say that nap time is for more than just the baby, if you catch my drift." Maho gave a wink with the completion of her sentence.
"Oh, now that I can imagine," Chisato chuckled, as she glanced back over at Kyoko and noticed a trickle of not running down her lip.
"Oh, hold on a sec..."
As if a hunter lying in wait, poised to strike, Kyoko suddenly reached out and latched her tiny hand onto Chisato's finger.
...
"Uh-oh; I think my finger's stuck," Chisato muttered as she attempted to wiggle it free of Kyoko's grasp.
As Chisato tried to wiggle her finger free, Kyoko in response tightened her grip, allowing her tiny arm to be flailed about as Chisato tried to free her finger.
"Okay, no, that's not gonna work; lemme..."
As Chisato continued to struggle, Kyoko began to whine. Wondering why this stranger would bother to stick her finger this close if she wasn't going to allow the infant to see what it tasted like.
"Nope, that's not gonna work either; maybe if I'm a little more gentle..."
At this point, Kyoko's rather soft whining became full volume screaming. Why wasn't the stranger letting her have the tasty snack being offered to her?
"You really are useless at this aren't you?!" Kurumi's voice said. She had made her way over to the now screaming Kyoko. Yaeka was at her side still. "Babies are naturally curious."
Kurumi didn't even hesitate, she reached into the carrier and gently lifted out the tiny delicate girl. She made sure to support her head as she cradled her in her arms. Then softly she rocked her. Unknown to everyone in the room, Kurumi began to quietly sing in Japanese, a soft and sweet lullaby to sooth the screaming infant.
"Sorry to barge in like this. But I have done this before..." she said softly. She looked over at Chisato and then at Maho. "These things will come in time. You just need to be gentle and understanding..."
"I appreciate the assist, Commander:" Maho nodded.
"More than welcome." Kurumi said in a hushed voice as she gently rocked Kyoko in her arms. "She's so beautiful," she said quietly as she gently placed Kyoko back into the carrier.
"Nakazato... A friend of ours..." Keisuke remarked. "Said we were always a cute couple, and that our child would be beautiful as well..."
