Mission:
The Breen
Location: Five Forward
Timeline: After 'A Quiet Place? (Part 1)'
Previously, on Star Trek: Myogi:
"Well, that's a bit of an unfair comparison," Chisato pointed out. "Mind you, Takeshi Nakazato was caught falsifying witness testimony in a court of law and had his Starfleet Commission revoked; you were genuinely under-utilized, at least in my personal opinion."
And now, the continuation:
"Friendly word of advice, I wouldn't mention that about Nakazato to Captain Takahashi... Or even Commander Takahashi for that matter." Chrirhc advised. "My understanding is that the Takahashis were and still are very close with Nakazato, and they're still resentful that things ended the way that they did."
Chisato shrugged. "Perhaps that may be true- I mean, I'd certainly be a little upset if Daddy had to give up his Starfleet Commission- but looking at this all from an objective standpoint, it was unfortunately an inevitable outcome; heck, Nakazato's lucky he only got off with a dismissal and not a full-on court martial- would've probably made it 10 times harder for him to get a job if he had been."
"And that would have been before the mob that stormed Starfleet Headquarters called him the 24th Century Benedict Arnold..." Chrirhc muttered. "Assuming that travesty still played out, of course..."
Chisato shook her head. "Regardless, comparing his circumstances to yours is like comparing apples to oranges; and even if it came down to it, you don't strike me as the kind of officer who would cave in to pressure and twist the facts."
"Maybe Foreman Chihc would have..." Chrirhc admitted. "Back when I still tolerated the rampant corruption, it would have been very easy for me to sweep something like a jobsite accident under the rug. In fact, looking back on it, it makes me sick how naturally that used to come to me..."
"But the fact that you're willing to admit you were wrong back then shows that you're a much better person than I think you give yourself credit for, Commander," Chisato assured him. "And we could use a lot more people who think like that."
"Anyway, I fear we may have gone a bit off topic here?" Chrirhc suggested. "While this distraction serves me well to delay discussing my kids, I'm sure you want to hear about them sooner rather than later?"
"Right, right, right," Chisato nodded. "Okay, so where was I...? Oh, yes; so, here I am, basically tossed headfirst into a gauntlet of tests for a field that I have neither the qualifications nor the desire to pursue, and I realize then and there that I have one of two choices- either I forfeit and potentially hamper my future career opportunities, or I make like we Intel officers tend to do when there's a kink in the plan and wing it."
"I presume that your performance impressed Captain Aisaka?" Chrirhc queried. "Not like it's a very high bar or anything..."
"Like I said- up to that point in time, I had neither the qualifications nor the interest to be pursuing a career in the Command Tract, so I kind of had to make it up as I went," Chisato shrugged. "And not all my solutions were perfect- personally speaking, I don't think I did much better than an A- -but my thought process is that if any point I somehow flunk the test, I'll have been determined to be unsuitable for a Command position, but having at the very least made an effort to look like I know what I was doing, I'd be able to keep my career prospects mostly in tact."
Her expression immediately darkened, as if she were getting to the part of the story that she dreaded.
"And then came the final test..."
The room switched to that of the Tokyo's Main Engineering, placing Chisato in the middle of the room. "Begin," Taiga said without giving Chisato time to adjust to the new environment.
A waring Klazon began to wail out loudly as Engineers rushed around from console to console. "Captain!" a young lieutenant called as he rushed over towards her. "I don't understand it. For some reason the Antimatter containtment fields are on the verge of collapse!" he said. "I know I only made Chief Engineer the other day, but I promise you this wasn't part of my doing. I inspected those containtment fields this morning!"
"Uhh...." Chisato ran a hand through her hair as she racked her brain for a solution. "Computer, emergency procedure; eject the anti-matter storage unit, authorization Nishikigi-Omega-Omega-3-1!"
"Unable to comply," The computer's voice responded. "Emergency ejection system is offline due to power failure."
The Engineer turned to a console. "I think I've determined the reason for the loss of the containment fields. They're losing power, there must be a rupture in the main power conduit."
"Do we have anyone who's qualified to fix the power conduit?" Chisato asked in a last-minute bout of desperation.
The lieutenant nodded. "Yes..." he said. "I'm the most qualified to go in there. However..."
Another engineer approached. "However, the radiation in the conduit will kill him."
The Chief nodded.
"Warning. Antimatter Containment Fields critical. Total collapse in two minutes" The computer warned.
"Damn!" Chisato scowled. "Alright, you stay here; I'll repair the conduits and have you walk me through it!"
Before the two engineers could stop her, she grabbed a toolkit and began making her way towards a nearby crawlspace.
"Captain!" The Chief Engineer said. He rushed after her and tugged on her uniform. "I'm sorry sir. But there's no time to talk you through it. That would take too long." he explained to her simply and quickly. "You're not an engineer, if this isn't done properly the Antimatter pods will explode destroying the ship and killing everyone aboard!"
"That may be true, Lieutenant," Chisato smiled nervously. "but my foremost obligation as your commanding officer is to this ship and her crew; if someone's going to have to die in order to repair the plasma conduits..."
She looked over at Taiga, and sucked in her breath.
"...I'd rather it be me."
"Captain, I don't think you should..."
A huge explosion cut off the engineer as the entire ship was suddenly engulfed in a ball of flame before everything went white.
"Simulation Failed." The Holodeck computer said.
"By all accounts, that should've been the end of it," Chisato sighed. "I failed the test, and in doing so demonstrated that I'm just not command material; not everyone is; I'd probably have a quick overview with Captain Aisaka regarding my performance, and then after that she'd send me on my way and someone else would likely be evaluated for the field..."
She sucked in her breath. "And then the simulation automatically reset..."
"So, like an old Human movie called 'Groundhog Day'?" Chrirhc supposed. "Perhaps Captain Takahashi might be right about Captain Aisaka's insidious nature..."
The white light faded away, and main Engineering returned.
The lieutenant nodded. "Yes..." he said. "I'm the most qualified to go in there. However..."
Another engineer approached. "However, the radiation in the conduit will kill him."
The Chief nodded.
"Warning. Antimatter Containment Fields critical. Total collapse in two minutes" The computer warned.
Without even being asked this time, Chisato grabbed a toolkit and climbed into the crawlspace before the engineers could stop her.
A forcefield suddenly appeared in front of Chisato blocking the entrance to the conduit. "Warning. Breach detected in conduit Beta Four Seven. Emergency Forcefields activated."
"Warning. Ninty seconds until Antimatter Containtment Field failure. Abandon Ship."
Chisato tapped her combadge. =A=Lieutenant, I can't reach the Conduit! How do I deactivate the forcefields?=A=
"I can't seem to lower the forcefield!" The chief replied. "The emergency systems aren't responding to my commands. Let me try to..."
Once again the ship was engulfed in a huge explosion, followed by the bathing of white light. "Simulation failed. Resetting to last point..." The computer said once again.
To be continued...
