Mission:
The Breen
Location: Shuttlebay
Timeline: (Before “The Parting of the Ways”
The Valkyrie settled down on her landing gear... Alone. Pippa and Dakota had returned to their original assignments now that Myogi was going back to the shipyard for repairs and Alisha had made the crossing from Alita to the New Orleans-class starship on her own. It had been a short, lonely trip, stuck in her own mind as the clearance to launch came and went, not even the voice of Jane herself in her ear to guide her in doing anything to solve the feeling in the pit of her stomach.
She had been dead and she knew it. The Iconian missiles had her cold, no countermeasures, no maneuvering ability left, then... The missiles were gone. As was Mia. She powered down the fighter as the canopy opened, but made no move to get out of it. For this trip, she hadn't even worn the life support gear, it was that routine of a transfer, just her uniform and the helmet that she took off and racked above her. She just didn't want to move, because how could she look Jane in the eyes and tell her... Tell her that she'd gotten their friend killed.
The Myogi was safe. It was traveling under its own power, with Takumi at the helm, freeing Jane to rush to the launch bay.
Reality punched her in the gut when the doors opened and showed only one fighter on the flight deck.
She ran to the access ladder and climbed up to see Alisha. She reached into the cockpit, fumbling for her hands and clutching them tightly as the tears poured forth.
The bravado and willpower that had kept the tears from Alisha's eyes wilted as she squeezed Jane's hands and she finally looked up at her fiancee, finally moving her legs to stand enough to pull her into a brief kiss and place her forehead against hers, "I'm sorry Jane, I couldn't... I didn't bring Mia back, I couldn't, I just... I don't know why she did that? She was free and clear and then... Oh God, Jane.."
“Shhhh it’s okay,” Jane said, leaning her forehead into Alisha’s. “It’s not your fault. I promise it’s not your fault.” Because it’s mine. She started sobbing, pulling Alisha into a tight hug.
"I can't do this anymore, Jane, I can't." Alisha sobbed into Jane's shoulder after several minutes of them just holding each other at the top of the fighter. "It was wrong that I even thought I could in the first place. If I'd been just a little smarter, she'd be alive still."
“No.” Jane pulled back and held Alisha’s face in her hands, tears wetting her palms. She looked deeply into her eyes. “This wasn’t your fault. There are lots of places to direct the blame but not toward you, understand?”
"It was my responsibility." Alisha said, "I know it was dangerous, she knew it was dangerous, but if I'd been a better flyer, that's all that I needed to be.. I shouldn't have even been out there, I wasn't ready."
“The Heralds did this,” Jane asserted. “They fired the missiles. They killed her. Or blame…” She wasn’t sure where to look, so her eyes cast down as more tears flowed. “Or blame me. For asking her to bring you home to me. Oh my god. You didn’t do this…I think I did. I’m so sorry.”
Alisha raised Jane's chin to look at her, "If she did.. Jane, look at me." She made Jane look into her eyes, "If she did, she did it because she loved us." She still blamed herself much more than Jane and Jane needed to know she hadn't done wrong, "I don't think she would have hesitated, even if you didn't ask her that. It was who she was."
Jane smiled sadly. “It really was,” she agreed. “She was always being impulsive,” she added with a quiet laugh.
"That's an understatement if I've ever heard one," Alisha sniffed hard while she stifled a laugh, "Didn't care who it was, she'd flirt with them or just seduce them. Always made fun of everyone, laughed at everything, never took anything seriously."
“She sure made brig time a lot easier!” Jane laughed and took a deep breath in through her nose. It helped ground her. “I’m going to miss her, Alisha.”
"Me too, sugarcube, me too." Alisha agreed, "Everything from here on out I owe to her." She gave Jane a gentle kiss, "I don't know what the future holds for us, but when we have kids, ours or if we adopt instead, and we will, mind you, I want a Mia. More than anything else."
And the dam holding back Jane’s tears broke. “Mia Reno-Sinclair. It’s perfect.”
"And I'm going to be there for them." Alisha smiled into Jane's face, holding it in both of her hands now, her chin still quivering, "I'm done with this, Jane... I can't go out there and undo everything she died to make happen. I'm going to resign from Starfleet, sugarcube, I'm going to be a civilian again. Just be Alisha Reno and maybe Alexis Silverstar, we'll see. And..." She paused, "I want you there with me. I'll understand if you want to stay, here on Myogi or somewhere else, but I can't."
“I’m not leaving your side,” Jane said. “Not now, not ever. We’ll build a home together. On Earth, or Proxima. I’ll—I’ll talk to T’Ren, see if I can get my IS-1 seat back. I can still fly. But I won’t stay here. Not without you.”
Alisha leaned in and kissed Jane tenderly on the lips, then several second later they parted, "I don't care where we live and if T'Ren won't give you your seat back, we'll make your own team and I'll sponsor it if need be. If you want to fly, we'll make sure you can. And we will be the Federations top celebrity couple, that's for sure, and we'll plan out a wedding ceremony that Mia would be proud of. We'll invite everyone from Myogi, too, And.. And.."
“And we’ll be together,” Jane finished for her. “You and me, forever.”
"Forever."
