Fight Fascism In All Its Forms

1,003 words; about a 5 minute read
Mission:
Indivisible
Location: Jane and Alisha’s quarters
Timeline: After “I Bring You Tidings From The 16th Fleet.”
The fleet was on its way, and the Myogi along with it. The journey would be long, but that just gave them time to prepare.
For Jane Sinclair, it also meant working out frustrations.
After her bridge shift, she went straight to the gym. Hands wrapped in tape, she bounced and ducked and dodged an imaginary opponent as she put her fists into the punching bag. It was a good way to vent.
These people had to be stopped. She was doing her part, but it felt awful that she couldn’t do more. That she couldn’t snap her fingers to end this entire crisis. Or at least make people see reason.
But she could put her bad energy to good use. Building up strength so when the time came to punch a fascist, she’d be ready.
After sweating out what felt like a litre of water and nearly undoing the work Dr. Ryo did fixing her hand and wrist, she returned to the quarters she shared with Alisha.
The blonde had already gotten out of her uniform and into a comfortable pair of of sweatpants and a tank top long before Jane had gotten home, replicating the ingredients for a simple meal and checking on where her girlfriend had gotten off to. It would take maybe fifteen minutes to cook, but she had just gotten everything set out when the doors slid open and she saw Jane walk in.
"Good afternoon sweetheart." She said jovially, before getting a good look at her, "Or should I say 'sweaty'heart?" The look on Jane's face had been telling to her and she stopped what she was doing to come around the counter, "Is everything all right?"
Jane let out a long sigh and then shook her head. “It’s this whole crisis,” she explained, getting increasingly agitated. “I hate this. I hate it so much. It feels like democracy is dying beneath us and we do everything to fight it but then outside forces just keep pulling and pulling and urrrrrggh!” Her hands were balled into fists but there was nothing to do with them except hold them at her side.
Alisha placed a hand on one shoulder and drew Jane into a tight hug, "I know, sugarcube, I know, and I don't like it either, but all we can do is the best that we can. Back when I was in Intelligence, I got to see a lot of the data behind things, and it's worse than it looks like to you. We have to believe in the goodness of most people to keep things going the way they ought to, because they are, mostly."
Jane let herself relax in the hug and eventually hugged back. “The worst part is they’ve co-opted something I truly believe in.” She stepped back and held Alisha’s hands. “Planets should have the right to leave the Federation if the people truly want it. If a clear majority of citizens legitimately want to peacefully secede, they should be able to. You know in primary schools all across Centauri we’re taught about how we became independent? The people didn’t want to be an Earth colony anymore, and so we weren’t. By then the idea of revolutionary wars was passé so we were granted legitimacy.” She took a deep breath. “But this Confederacy is taking this idea of self determination, something I’ve been fighting my whole life for, and perverting it with fascism and authoritarian action and violence. I can’t stand it. I hate them.”
"I think that Centauri desiring to become a member world of the Federation also helped in the matter, so it was less of a secession than welcoming a new friend into the fold." Alisha said gently, "I actually wouldn't have a problem with the Confederacy if they weren't coercing worlds into leaving the Federation by many different means. They've subverted elections, enacted coups both in the open and behind the scenes.. Disappeared people..." She trailed off as that hit close to home with her, but still put on a brave smile, "And while all that might be well and good for the Romulans and Klingons and no doubt other species we haven't even met, these are Federation worlds or recently so. I can't talk about what I know, or think I know now, because I'm no longer getting updated information, I'm just not sure a direct conflict is the best means, but if it comes down to it, I'm not going to back down."
“We’re going to stop them, right?” Jane asked. “Direct action or not, words or phasers, we’ll stop them?”
"I.. I.." Alisha spluttered, never having been the type for phasers herself. She could fake it when she needed to, but aside from that time aboard the Nikko, which she had carefully crafted so that she was at no risk herself initially and only on stun. Then the aftermath of that whole situation. "I'm sure the Federation will, one way or the other." She had to temporize, suddenly having doubts about her new job even. Could she fly against someone else, shoot them down? Or would she just be a target until her luck ran out. "We will."
“Together,” Jane whispered. “Can we snuggle a bit? I know I’m sweaty but I just want to lie with you for a few minutes before we eat?”
"Of course." Alisha loosened the hug only enough to keep her arm tight around Jane and guide her towards the bedroom, "We can stay here as long as you'd like, I'm not going to go anywhere."
As they lay down together, Jane pulled Alisha’s arm around her and nuzzled into her shoulder, happy to have the woman she loves in these most distressing times.
They would end these fascists. And they would do it together.
