My former Resting place

1,097 words; about a 5 minute read

Mission: The Breen
Location: Sickbay
Timeline: a 'bit' of a back post

Walking out of the bridge, there was one place she wanted to see. The Medical bay. It was tough it not being hers, but she wanted to get to know it was in the right hands.

As she made her way down the turbolift and down the corridor. She made a mental list on which corridors led to where. in case she was needed.

Making her way back to her office after a quick lunch, Bree spotted the female commander in red that she only recognized from the ship‘s manifest as the Third Officer. In a sea of teal uniforms, hers was easy to spot. As approached, she offered, “Hello, Commander. May I be of service?“ Scott subtly looked for signs of illness or injury, but not seeing any, she was relieved and now more curious than anything.

"Just thought i would check out the medical bay." Out of habit she started walking around the bay. "This bay is a lot larger than the ones I am used to."

"It's spacious and well-equipped," Bree replied agreeably, more curious than perplexed by the sudden arrival. Was this an inspection? Or were these the actions of a woman missing her old stomping grounds? They hadn't formally met before now, so if it was an inspection of some sort, it felt a bit odd.

Feeling that she kind of caught the chief off guard. "I apologize, my former position was medical chief, I also taught medicine at the academy for a few years before getting back to space."

Bree nodded, understranding now more about what brought Jessica to the medical center of the ship. She smiled. "No need to apologize for taking an interest. I understand better than most what you mean. My official title is chief counselor, but I hold a medical degree as my primary training is in psychiatry, and it's important to me to keep my medical skills sharp. They come in handy here, as you can probably imagine," she added matter of factly. She hated battle medicine but clung to the memories of all the other things she got to do as a physician - like help catch babies. "I see you wear command red now -- there must be quite the story there."

"If it was up to me, i'd still be in the medical bay, however, they want more commanders with medical knowledge seeing as we are in war." Jessica replied

Bree could see the wisdom in making sure command level officers had a bit more advanced medical training than was typical in peace time, but she was hard pressed to think of a reason Starfleet Command would insist on putting physicians in command level positions unless those physicians were going to command specialized medical or hospital vessels. It didn't make sense to her, but questioning such decisions would be a waste of her energy.

"I'm sorry. I know we're supposed to serve where we're told, especially in times of war, but I imagine it's still difficult to be pulled from the work you know and love. Still, I can't imagine they'd pull just any physician into the command ranks. You must have proven some sort of aptitude for leadership outside of medical, yeah?"

"I decided to take the commanders test, and aced it, I spent one last posting as a CMO, and was able to get some experience on the bridge, several times taking command. It was a recommendation from the Captain. There are hospital ships out there, and I do have to step out of the medical bay if I want to get command of one of those."

Bree nodded. "That makes sense. Even if you have an aptitude for command, it still takes time to gain practical experience before taking on command of a ship as unique as a medical vessel. How are you finding the Myogi so far?"

"Well I did take cmmand training and aced it. A few duties on bridge, and I kind of yearned for an opportunity."

It was the second time Johnson had mentioned acing the command training in a matter of seconds. Bree wondered if she was trying to convince Bree of something Johnson herself was wrestling with. "Was the Myogi the opportunity you were yearning for?"

"We shall see, being in the middle of a war, was not my intention when seeking command experience. But with recommendations from starfleet medical, and my previous posting... I jumped at the opportunity."

"War is regrettable," Bree lamented. "Though I suppose there can be no greater command test than that. I expect it's going to take time to adjust to the new role, but if you jumped at this opportunity, it sounds as if command wasn't just something you showed potential aptitude for, but something you truly wanted."

"Got a point there, my brothers are captain of the Iroquois, and XO of the Tokyo... so its gotta be in the blood."

"That doesn't exactly sound like you want command, even if the skill for it runs in the family," Bree replied. "Am I misunderstanding you?"

"Its something that I thought would be beyond my want. Its the same when one cannot picture one outside of a command chair, wearing an admirals uniform. I have never pictured myself as anything more than a doctor. But now that I am in a command role. Im going to be adjusting to the new sea legs that I have been given."

Bree could certainly understand something being beyond whatever someone could imagine, and she could also also understand feeling ambivalent about something motivated by orders rather than true desire. She just wasn’t sure how much room there could be for ambivalence in command officers, especially in the midst of a war. “Every new command officer needs time and space to get his or her sea legs. They also deserve people. They can trust to share their doubts and fears. I don’t wish to be presumptive, but my door is always open to you and I’ve never been known to turn down a quiet chat in the mess hall if that’s ever needed.“

"I appreciate that, Commander. I've got to get going but I will schedule my physical asap... I know doctors make the worst patients."

Bree chuckled. "I love all my patients, including the doctors, but I'll definitely hold you to scheduling that physical. Thanks for stopping by," Scott added. "Come by any time you miss things, but be careful as I just might put you to work."

"Promise." Jessica replied as she walked out of sickbay.
