Mission:
The Breen
Location: Federation-Breen Border
Timeline: March 23, 2397
The detection of a massive Protomatter detonation within Breen space as well as increased Herald activity from within the borders of the Breen Confederacy had placed the Alliance on high alert: Starfleet and the KDF had sent additional ships to the border to secure it and ensure the safe return of a small strike force that had been sent over the border.
As the strike force had been led by Task Force Jomo's USS Myogi, two more Task Force Jomo vessels were among the forces built up along the border - those being the USS Kaga, which had recently loaned two pilots over to the Myogi, as well as the USS Haruna, the Myogi's sister ship.
Captain Koko Kaga paced nervously on the Kaga's bridge. They, along with the rest of the ships in the area had been monitoring the hive of Breen transmissions that were occurring just across the border. However, their orders were only to maintain battle readiness in the event of a Herald or Breen attack, and were to remain observational unless attacked.
Captain Koko Kaga anxiously paced about on her bridge. As the strike force had not been heard from since they crossed the border, the cause of the protomatter detonation traced to roughly the Khourani system was yet to be determined. Until she saw the Myogi and the rest of the ships safe and sound, Koko was well within her right to be skeptical.
During their time in this holding pattern, linguists from across the fleet had been putting their collective brains together to attempt to decipher the Breen transmissions, and a disturbing pattern was starting to emerge - The Breen appeared to be under attack; most likely by Heralds. The findings had been forwarded to Starfleet Command, but no concrete orders had been issued in regards to assisting. However, that was all about to change:
As Koko watched a flight of their fighters pass by on the viewscreen, her concerns about the Myogi were suddenly interrupted by the Ops officer attempting to get her attention:
"Captain!"
"What is it, Lieutenant?" Koko asked, snapping out of her trance.
"We've just picked up a garbled Starfleet transmission from within Breen space: We believe it's from the Myogi, sir. Audio only."
"Play it back:" Koko ordered.
The intercepted transmission began as a burst of static:
"...-sica Johns-...-ceived a dis-...Breen space...attacked by-...-stance. By Starf-...Order 6...assistance...course...sato is...you now."
"We're working to try and clean the transmission up - it's all there, but-!"
"Save your breath." Koko cut Ops off. "I think we may have what we've all been waiting for: Recall the fighters and prepare to make the jump to warp. Ops, I want a fleetwide channel opened please:"
The ops officer's fingers glided effortlessly along the smooth surface of his station.
"Channel opened, Captain:"
"Attention, all ships:" Koko spoke. "This is Captain Koko Kaga of the USS Kaga: We've just received an incomplete transmission from the USS Myogi: From this transmission, we have reason to believe that the strike force is in trouble. In our current position, awaiting orders from Starfleet Command will take too long, and the window to mount an effective rescue will have long elapsed by the time we do. As such, I am hereby invoking Starfleet General Order 6 in order to mount a rescue mission. Any ship that wishes to join us should prepare to make the jump to warp."
By this point, reports of the fighters landing should have started coming in, but instead, there was a more pressing external matter:
"Sir, the Haruna is hailing us:"
"On screen:" Koko ordered. "Let's see what Zh'gero wants..."
The viewscreen changed to display the Haruna's bridge, where a certain troublesome Andorian stood amongst her fellow Anodrians.
"Captain Kaga:" Shimakaze began in a rather disapproving tone. "A single garbled transmission, and you decide to abandon our orders?"
"Zh'gero, we could sit here all day and argue about my human tendency to react based on incomplete data and in the process uphold our orders, so I'll skip that and offer you this to chew on:" Koko replied. "If you're fine with letting yours and your crew's defeat by Captain Takahashi and the Myogi's crew be the final score because they're all dead, then there's nothing stopping you from holding your current position."
Several seconds passed. Shimakaze looked as if she wanted to argue, but the words necessary wouldn't come. Instead of speaking, the connection was suddenly terminated.
"The Haruna's preparing to make the jump." Ops reported.
"TIC to bridge:" TIC reported. "All fighters present and accounted for. We're good to make the jump on your command!"
"Copy that, TIC:" Koko replied, turning to the viewscreen. She knew she was going to face hell for this, but if it meant the Myogi and the rest of the strike force got to come home to fight another day, it would all be worth it.
"All ships..." Koko ordered. "...Make the jump."
On Koko's command, the Kaga and several hundred Starfleet and Klingon ships accelerated to the speed of light and beyond, on a trajectory to cross the Breen border.
