Mission:
The Breen
Location: Various
Timeline: March 15, 2397
The lone Valkyrie fighter dropped out of warp at the edge of the Algonquin Fleet Yards. It was unusual these days for a single fighter to appear without an escort, but thankfully for the small craft, its former mothership, the USS Kaga, had been passing through the sector, offering the pilot only a short warp jump she needed to complete unescorted.
The pilot, Lieutenant Dakota Meadows, had been asked to take on a temporary assignment to Task Force Jomo's former flagship, the USS Myogi, to bolster that ship's starfighter operations. Which the smaller ship was expanding for their upcoming mission. Dakota had naturally leapt at the opportunity. She had flown with Lieutenants Reno and Amaro before, and felt that having a familiar face around would help put them at ease instead of having random pilots from throughout the fleet brought in to bolster the Myogi's numbers.
"Algonquin yard control, this is Valkyrie Kaga-One-Two, call sign 'Sodak'." Dakota spoke over the radio. "Official business is to rendezvous with the United Starship Myogi."
"Kaga-One-Two, acknowledged." The yard controller replied. "Proceed direct to dock One-Seven-Five. You'll find your new home there."
"Roger, proceed direct to dock One-Seven-Five, Kaga-One-Two. Good day."
Dakota's fighter weaved through the busy Algonquin yard traffic, maneuvering past shuttles, runabouts, and workbees scuttling about the yard as she proceeded to the indicated dock. In the direction that she was going, Dakota spotted a familiar ship holding position over one of the docks, and knew that had to be her final destination.
She had seen this ship before; at Rheuys and at Braxus, and Dakota took a detour to take a closer look at it: Before its explosive debut at Rheuys, Dakota had heard whisperings of Starfleet developing a new class of carrier to regain the advantage that had been lost with the Star Empire's rollout of the Ar'kif class, and with every ship needed for the war effort, the prototype had been making waves in the field.
"The Starship Alita..." Dakota sighed as she came into view of the prototype's name and registry number. "What I'd give to be assigned to her instead of the Picard-era scrapheap below... Snowflake might finally respect me..."
Dakota reminded herself to keep her private, traitorous thoughts to herself as she flew past the Alita's aft and banked down towards the dry dock where the Myogi was undergoing repairs.
"Good afternoon, Myogi control; this is Sodak, requesting landing clearance." Dakota contacted the Myogi on its frequency.
"You are cleared for landing, Sodak. Welcome to your new home..."
"The pleasure's mine. Sodak out."
Slowing her fighter down as she approached the entrance to the Myogi's shuttlebay, Dakota smoothly touched down on the deck. After which, she began the process of powering down and securing her fighter.
A familiar face stood next to her own fighter talking with a deck officer. Pippa Williams was taking off her gloves and pulling her long blonde hair out of the ponytail she kept it in during flight operations, all while watching her Kaga squadronmate finish her shutdown operations. When the Myogi’s newest arrival opened her hatch, Pippa waved up at her with delicate fingers. “You always did arrive after me, didn’t you, Sodak?” she teased.
"Seems we both took the jump on this temporary assignment, huh?" Dakota remarked as she climbed out of her fighter. "And all I did was take a detour to take a closer look at the Alita... She's a fine-looking ship, and I'd love to serve on her someday..."
"Getting a berth on Alita would take some doing, Sodak." Alisha said with a wide grin as she walked through the open doors. Her hair was shiny blonde and the flight suit she wore was pristine, her shiny new wings over her right breast pocket, "Chaser, welcome aboard as well. It's a pleasure to have both of you here with us. I'm sure that Banshee's already making arrangements to welcome you both properly."
"Knowing Banshee, it'll be some kind of hazing ritual that will render us unconscious so she can do nasty things to us in our sleep." Dakota sighed. "You can tell her I send my regards when I don't show up."
"Spoilsport," Pippa said with a laugh.
"Not this time." Alisha gave a light laugh, "I've gotten a promise to behave out of her, at least BEFORE the battle to come. I had to tell her that the victory celebration was all hers to plan out once we're all back from the operation, but it's worth it." She didn't make any mention about the odds of that happening.
"Any victory, no matter how small, is worth celebrating to its fullest," Pippa said. "Thank you for the welcome, Jem. Is your other half around by any chance? I should like to catch up at some point."
"I'm sure that I can arrange for some rec time, especially while we're en route." Alisha grinned, "But we can't get drunk or anything of the sort, we'll need to be on the ball out in there. In the meantime, can I interest either of you in a trip to the lounge?"
"Oh, fine..." Dakota reluctantly sighed. "Alright, but I'm not accepting any drink that I don't see either poured from the bottle or ordered from a replicator."
"CHICAS!" The smile was audible on the voice that came through the open bay doors before anyone even saw the Hispanic pilot walk in, "It's party time!" She waved the two large bottles around, one in each hand as she sauntered through the door in her own flight suit half unzipped and open, "Welcome to Myogi and the most fun flight group to be a part of!"
"Fun implies that this flight group lacks discipline." Dakota scoffed, folding her arms. "Which itself implies that the lessons we taught on the Kaga weren't learned..."
“Or maybe it’s us that need to learn some lessons,” Chaser said. “Our way isn’t necessarily the only way. Pour me one, Banshee!”
Mia grinned widely as she just handed a bottle over to Pippa instead of doing anything so uncouth as finding a glass to pour it into. Alisha smiled and shook her head while she sidled up next to Dakota, "We can have fun here along with being disciplined in the cockpit." She mentioned to the much more serious pilot, "Sometimes it's a real trade-off to keep her from doing something really risky out there, especially when she's the one teaching me all the tactics and flight maneuvers out there. I may be the 'senior pilot' here, but I'm still rather green out there and I know it."
"Then maybe you should take advantage of the extra pilots while you have the chance." Dakota suggested. "Never hurts to diversify your technique in the cockpit, especially if the only person you're learning from is..." Dakota dropped her voice to a whisper. "Her."
“The benefit to having her here is especially good, because even she tells me not to what she’s about to do until I get better.” Alisha had a chuckle for Dakota, “But I’ll take any tips and tricks you or Chaser can show me. In fact, if you wanted to take tactical lead in the flight, it would probably be better for our chances of survival. I’m still developing my instincts and I trust them, but…”
Dakota laughed.
"If you can keep up with me, you may learn a thing or two." She said. "I've been pushing myself a lot as a pilot in order to be put into consideration for a transfer."
"Do you know what the best thing about being in fighters instead of Intelligence is?" Alisha asked Dakota, "I get lots and lots of flight time. I can keep up with you in speed and we'll see if I can maneuver with you, too."
"Well, I guess we'll put that claim to the test." Dakota smirked. "I'm serious when I say you'll have to fly at your limit to keep up while I'm holding back. If you can keep up with me while I'm pushing MY limits, maybe you'll be Armitage material someday too."
"I don't think so." Alisha remarked and shook her head, "I'm a bit old to start thinking I can really keep up with all of you when I'm JUST starting to learn the whole flight thing."
"Well, suit yourself, Jem." Dakota unfolded her arms and let them go back to her sides. "When I do get that assignment aboard an Armitage carrier, I'll be sure to send you a greeting card."
Dakota then proceeded to scoop her bag up off the deck.
"Now, not to be a party pooper or anything, but I'm figuring I'll scope out where I've been assigned to bunk and chill the f**k out for a bit." She declared. "Maybe I'll rejoin you girls over a bite to eat?"
“I should do the same,” Pippa said, picking up her own pack. “It really will be nice flying with you all. Alisha, I’m sure you’ll pick up bits and bobs from all of us. See you all soon, yeah?”
As she walked with Dakota toward the corridor, Pippa couldn’t help but quip. “Think they’ll bunk us together? Ooh, it’ll be like New Berlin all over again.”
"You and I remember New Berlin very differently..." Dakota grumbled.
