Mission: The Breen
Location: Sickbay, Deck 7
Timeline: After 'Bree and the Wrecking Ball (Part 1)'

Previously, on Star Trek: Myogi:

It was a sobering if reasonable thought. Naturally, Bree felt for Liz and wanted to do whatever she could to help, recognizing that even with support, what Liz was facing was not easy.

And now, the continuation:

"Well, if you'll have me, I'm here for you," Bree offered sincerely. "It's never too early to start preparting physically and emotionally for what's to come. I promise not to overwhelm you. That said, I'm told having an idea what to expect can really help moms to be feel less overwhelmed. I'll get your vitals and then we can have a proper listen to Timmy's heartbeat. Perhaps after that, if you're interested, we can set up a few times to meet to talk more about what to expect when it's time for Timmy to make his appearance and what comes after?"

"Well, it ain't perfect, but at least it's a start..." Liz reluctantly agreed to Bree's offer. "Maybe it'll help with my fear of childbirth. In all my years, it's the one thing I fear more than death."

Bree inwardly took a breath. A phobia that severe was going to be difficult to mitigate in the time they had remainning, but it wasn't like the fear was an unusual one. "It's a common fear," Bree answered with a nod, "but I think like a lot of things, it just takes knowledge and experience to feel less afraid. I'm sure there are things you do on the regular that are no big deal to you, but would scare me to death."

In the meantime, Bree noted Liz's blood pressure and other vitals were normal despite the discussion of her fears. That was a good sign.

"Yeah," Liz admitted. "There's some things that us in the corps would do without second thought that would give you regs pause, and that's putting it politely..."

Bree wasn’t sure if he called a reg was some sort of shorthand or was slightly derogatory, and as much as she wanted to inquire further, she knew she had probably better stay on topic. “I’m sure after everything you’ve done as a marine, childbirth will be no match,“ Scott replied with a grin. “All your vitals look good, including your temperature, blood pressure, and weight. I’m just going to have you lie back now and we’ll take a closer look at your belly and little Timmy inside. How long is it been since you’ve had a chance to see him? I could run a quick scan if you like?”

It took Liz a while before she was successfully lying on her back. It was easier in a normal bed for Liz to lay down, for having a lower bed helped both natural and artificial gravity do the work for her, but on a raised biobed, she had to navigate around her massive belly. If it hadn't have been for Scott helping her, she may still have been floundering trying to get her legs around her belly to assume a lying down position. Once Liz was finally lying down, she began to undo her tunic, fully exposing her belly for the ultrasound probe.

“I promise to be quick as I know it’s uncomfortable to lie flat on your back for long periods. Tell me if you have any trouble breathing or are otherwise uncomfortable. I’m just going to feel your belly a bit to see if I can assess Timmy’s position. I like to keep low tech skills sharp just in case technology doesn’t work.“

Bree started with a visual inspection of Liz‘s abdomen. The skin was naturally stretched in places to accommodate her growing belly, but her belly was also warm to the touch and the skin was suffused with blood. As she gently palpated, Liz‘s abdomen, the flesh was mostly soft beneath her fingers, which was normal. “ Does Timmy like to position himself in a particular spot? I’m sure I can find him myself, but usually mons to be know exactly where their babies like to park themselves.“

"Little bastard loves to snuggle up on my right side." Liz replied. "Probably why I'm most comfortable sleeping on that side..."

Not expecting Liz to refer to her unborn son that way, she laughed and may have giggle snorted in the process. Stifling her laughter with one hand, she reached for the transducer and was soon projecting a 4D view of Timmy in the air. "Just as you predicted, here he is tucked on your right side."

With a flick of her wrist, Bree was soon able to allow the soft rhythm of Timmy's steady and strong heartbeat to fill the room.

Liz still had mixed feelings about hearing the sound of her son's heartbeat. While a growing part of her was elated to hear it, part of her was still blaming herself for what she had to do to get to this point. Liz suspected that she would never stop blaming herself, even after Timmy's cries filled the delivery room.

"Everything okay?" Bree asked. It was rare for a mother to be to go silent upon hearing her child's heartbeat. "A strip of gold pressed latinum for your thoughts."

"Pretty much exactly what I've told you already." Liz sighed. "Though I also keep in mind the words of my last reg commander - the child inside is innocent despite the sins of the mother... May have paraphrased it a little bit, but that's the sentiment that talked me out of an abortion."

Liz's former commander's words seemed emotionally manipulative to Bree and raised additional concerns for Scott. Remaining pregnant out of obligation was just as unhealthy as choosing to parent and giving a child the responsibility of keeping his mother on the straight and narrow. "When it comes to medical decisions especially, it's important to make sure the choices are truly ours. Do you think your commander gave you food for thought that helped you make what you now know as the better choice for your life compared to terminating the pregnancy?"

Bree knew Liz's available options were different now, but medically speaking, she needed to know Liz's choices were hers and that she felt fully informed of all her options and wasn't ignoring them because they weren't viewed as socially acceptable.

"I do, yes." Liz replied. "Though, I'm sure Captain Takahashi could provide you with a long list of all that woman's faults."

“No doubt,” Bree replied. “No matter how complicated people are, I don’t believe people are entirely good or bad. I think we’re all just trying to do the best we can.” Scott held out hand for Liz to grab so Scott could ease her into a sitting position. “Do you have any questions or concerns for me before we get you back on your feet? I’m satisfied little Timmy is doing well in there, but I would really like to meet with you again to go over some things if you’re game? It wouldn’t have to be anything here if you’d be more comfortable elsewhere.“

"Sure, you got any availability today?" Liz asked. "Not like there's a whole lot else to do while we're at warp..."

“I’m due for a meal break in about 30 minutes,“ Bree replied. “We can meet in the mess hall if you like or you’re welcome to come to my quarters so we could have a more private chat if you prefer?“

"Nah, in 30 minutes, I have a marine drill scheduled on holodeck three." Liz explained. "It's a big deal that I was able to get holodeck three turned back on for this exercise, and I really don't want to miss my opportunity. Maybe some other time, then?"

"Sure," Bree replied brightly. She didn't want to appear pushy or over eager, but she knew the sooner they got started, the more time she would have to help Liz stay informed and relaxed. "I'll check my calendar for tomorrow and reach out to set something up."
