Mission:
The Breen
Location: Breen Space
Timeline: March 23, 2397 - After 'The Battle of Khourani'
Captain's log, Starship Myogi:
The raid on Khourani was a success. The destruction of the Khourani protomatter reserves should cripple the Heralds' war effort. But not without great cost to the entire attack force.
Many Klingon warriors, including the entire crew of the IKS Worf, were sent to Sto-vo-kor, and the Alita has also reported significant losses, with Captain Shokuho estimating around 15 of the 40 fighters the Alita was sent out with were lost. We too have lost people, including Lieutenants Hikaru Tama and Frederick Boley, who lost their lives trying to get our port nacelle back online.
Speaking of the port nacelle, engineering teams have managed to stabilize it to the point where we can hold and maintain our own warp field, though Lieutenant Rori estimates we won't have high warp until we reach the nearest starbase. In that regard, I have asked Captain Shokuho to continue having the Alita tow us in the interest of getting back to Federation space as quickly as possible.
End of log.
The bridge of the Myogi was a complete mess. Several consoles remained inoperable, even as engineers lay underneath them attempting to restore their functionality. The floor was covered in the shattered remains of the decorative ceiling panels, and exposed wiring hung dangerously close to crewmembers, presenting an electrocution hazard.
Despite all this, Chrirhc hadn't moved from his station, working with the cracked interface as he continued to monitor transmissions, both friendly and unfriendly. As their journey had progressed, Chrirhc had noticed a pattern emerge among Breen transmissions. He had been in contact with his counterpart on the Alita, putting together theories on what could be going on that had gotten the Breen stirred up.
"Hey, Commander;" Chrirhc called Chisato over to get a third opinion.
"What can I do for you, Mister Chihc?" Chisato inquired as she made her way over to where Chrirhc was seated.
"What do you make of all this?" Chrirhc asked in regards to the increased Breen communications. "Lieutenant Nelson and I can't make heads or tails on what they're saying, but we agree that this isn't normal Breen chatter."
"Lemme have a listen," Chisato suggested."If you'd mind standing up for just a sec..."
"She's all yours;" Chrirhc said, standing up. "Though just beware, the cracks make it think you're making a double input, it's really annoying."
The two of them fell silent as Chisato donned Chrirhc's earpiece and listened in on the transmission.
"Let's see... abrupt and inconsistent shifts in pitch and volume... irregular pacing... heightened vocal tension..."
Chisato glanced up at Chrirhc. "If I didn't know any better, I'd say they're in some form of distress; question is, what for?"
"Lieutenant Nelson's running theory is that the Heralds aren't behind it." Chrirhc surmised.
Chisato reached up and tapped her commbadge. =A=Could we get a science officer up on the bridge, please?=A=
Within a few minutes, a disheveled looking Science officer stepped off the turbolift, his uniform heavily soiled from the battle.
"You called for Science?" He asked.
"Whoa; um... first of all, do you need a change of clothes?" Chisato asked, motioning to the officer's soiled attire.
"Do you want my help or not?" The Science officer challenged. "Because I can go right back down that turbolift and get back to helping the guys out with getting Science stabilized if that's the way you want to handle it."
"No, it's alright," Chisato insisted. "So, do you think it would at all be possible to adjust the universal translator to interpret Breen language patterns? Doesn't need to be perfect, just enough to get a basic picture."
"I can certainly give it a shot..." The Science officer shrugged. "I'll just need your seat..."
"Oh, the irony..." Chisato chuckled as she stood up and offered the science officer Chrihrc's seat. "Apologies that your chair's suddenly become the hottest commodity on the bridge, Commander."
"Join the club." Chrirhc commented wryly.
The Science officer pulled up the controls for the universal translator, being mindful of the cracked interface and its tendency to "double click." Accessing a database of all readily available recordings of Breen speech, he proceeded to dump the clips into a universal translator algorithm template, setting the parameters to accept rough translations.
"Give it a minute here. Universal translator can be fussy with new algorithms being added in, especially ones made up on the fly like the one I just made."
Several seconds passed before the previously indeterminate Breen transmissions began playing as rough translations intelligible to the crew of the Myogi:
"...Backup to Kynsar star..."
"...Brentek overrun. Heralds crawling..."
"Gorsek, report..."
"Nartren casualties large..."
The three of them stood there in bewildered silence before Chisato asked the one question that was on all of their minds:
"The Iconians... attacking the Breen? But why?"
"Perhaps they suspect the weapons platforms turning on the Khourani facility was a deliberate betrayal by the Breen?" Chrirhc speculated.
Chisato glanced over at the Science Officer. "About how accurate would you say the algorithm is?"
"With everything we currently know on the Breen..." The Science officer surmised. "I'd probably say about forty point three percent."
"So you're saying there's a greater than 50 percent chance we might be getting the wrong information?" Chisato asked.
"The only way that percentage goes up is if we know a lot more on the Breen than we currently do." The Science officer explained. "With how little we know, the accuracy I just quoted is being extremely generous: It may be even less than that."
"Even with what we learned of them through the Dominion War, we still know very little on the Breen." Chrirhc pointed out.
While the Myogi was under tow, Jane been helping repair crews fix up consoles, prioritizing her own. She slid out from under it when the transmission came on over the speakers. “That doesn’t sound good,” she observed.
"Casuties would require the need for the doctor to be present. If its a large scale casualty incident... we may need more help than just us." Jessica replied, walking up to the three. "However, the breen have always been hesitant when it comes to outsiders assisting their people, they are very keen on keeping their physical appearance... unknown to the rest of the world."
"So who knows whether or not intervening in this would make things exponentially worse?" Chisato surmised. "Not to be a Debbie Downer, of course, but Commander Johnson definitely bit the nail on the head."
"So, you're suggesting we keep to our current trajectory and let the Breen take what's coming to them?" The Science officer implied. "Because that doesn't sound like something Captain Takahashi would willingly sign off on."
"Well... I wouldn't necessarily say we leave them out to die, either," Chisato argued.
Ami had walked in from the turbolift next to them during the conversation, "Why not?" She asked Chisato, "They're the primary reason we got hurt as bad as we did. Besides, we can now hold Warp 8 on our own to get the hell out of here." She sighed wearily, "I don't even think we'll fall to pieces if we do. If we'd been able to sneak in, instead of the Breen seeing us, we could have won."
"Lieutenant; we did win." Chrirhc responded. "We just had to take a different route to get there."
"We accomplished the mission, Sir, and survived." Ami was still clearly bitter about the loss of her people, but she was grumpy primarily because she was tired, very tired, "Winning should feel better."
"You know, we still don't know to what degree the Breen were actually involved in the Khourani System installation," Chisato was quick to point out. "Sure, the Iconians had a few Breen ships, but... it was almost like they were decoys, and not actually commanded by living Breen?"
"Some sort of AI, or just someone unfamiliar with the ships?" Ami asked, then shrugged, "Could be, I suppose."
Chisato leaned up against the console. "I don't know, something about this isn't setting right with me; perhaps we should see about getting Captain Takahashi up here and getting her input on this?"
"It doesn't matter in this case... Starfleet General Order 6 explicitly mandates that all personnel and vessels must aid and assist any space-faring vessel signaling a distress call." Jessica replied, "We may not be thrilled about it, but given we know it is a medical emergency. If this goes our way, the Breen can be powerful allies, past behind us, the Iconians are bigger than everyone. The breen being on our side, makes us, that much bigger. Also this instance may bring one line people tend to not think about. The enemy of my enemy, is a potential Ally."
"True, that," Chisato agreed. "But if we're going to go through with this, shouldn't we at the very least get in touch with the other Captains, clue them into our game plan?"
"I agree that should be the plan. Seeing as you are the second officer of the Tokyo, that falls to you." Jessica stated, "If they refuse I can pull the medical general order mumbo jumbo out. Or I can just pull it out right away, and get the nonsense out of the way."
"This is your ship, Commander, and right now you have the bridge," Chisato pointed out. "Make the call- I insist."
"Very well." Jessica replied as he walked over to the center seat. "Commander Ebisuzawa, open a channel to the fleet."
Kurumi popped up from behind the danaged tactical station. She had been listening whilst doing her own repairs. Of course she looked like hell from the battle. "Ok, give me a moment here..." she said as she tapped on the surface of the flickering console. "Channel open.. I think."
