Mission: The Breen
Timeline: After 'The Enemy of My Enemy (Part 1)'

Previously, on Star Trek: Myogi:

Kurumi popped up from behind the danaged tactical station. She had been listening whilst doing her own repairs. Of course she looked like hell from the battle. "Ok, give me a moment here..." she said as she tapped on the surface of the flickering console. "Channel open.. I think."

And now, the continuation:

"Attention all ships, this is Commander Jessica Johnson, here on the Myogi. We have received a distress call emanating from within Breen space. The Breen are being attacked by the Heralds and are requiring assistance. By Starfleet General Order 6, we are required to aid assistance. Divert course, and set course to the coordinates Commander Chisato is transmitting over to you now."

Hearing the announcement, Bree wondered how the crew of the Myogi were going to cope with Johnson's directive. Bree understood it reflected regs accurately, but after all they had just been through, with people injured, dead, traumatized, and exhausted, she wouldn't be surprised if anyone instinctively resented spending their remaining resources and waning physical and mental energy to save people that not long before had been trying to wipe them from the universe.

Even now, Bree's nervous system was still vibrating from how close they all came to death. People she had never met had saved them all, and while she felt tremendous gratitude and pride, she also knew she was still wrapping her head around it all. She could only imagine how the rest of the bridge crew were feeling. She wished she could offer more than an ear and supportive words, but she knew she could not dwell on what she couldn't do or what might be to come.

In this moment, she focused on filling her lungs and the feel of the deck beneth her feet.

"Relaying them now," Chisato announced as she cross-referenced the source of the transmission, crunched a few numbers to determine a subsequent set of coordinates, and then forwarded them to the other ships in the task force.

Jessica tapped her combadge, "Johnson to Captain Takahashi, your presence is required on the bridge immediately."

"Copy that, Johnson. I'm on my way. Takahashi out." Came Maho's voice in response.

On the viewscreen, the stars whizzing past began to move sideways as the Alita began to turn ahead of them, pulling the Myogi along with it.

"The Alita has received the coordinates." Ops reported. "We've received a message from Captain Shokuho, Commander: She says we better be back in fighting shape by the time we arrive."

"Well, I'm sure we be in some kind of fighting shape." He replied. "Contact the doctor get them up here as well."

At this point, Maho arrived back on the bridge, Keisuke and Ichika trailing behind her. With power restored to the holographic nanny, Maho and Keisuke had left Kyoko in its care to report to the bridge together, and had been joined by Ichika on the way..

"What's the situation, Commander?" Maho asked. "We could feel the Alita turning in the turbolifts."

"We have received a distress call, from inside Breen space, they are under attack by theIconians, mass casualties. By Starfleet general order 6, I've ordered all ships to render aid." Jessica replied,

"Of course- how could I be so stupid?" Ichika sighed, evidently kicking herself for not remembering that General Order 6 was actually a thing until Jessica had brought it up.

Bree winced at hearing Ichika call herself stupid aloud. It was a comment driven by emotion and fatigue no doubt, and the counselor wasn't judging Ichika for it, but it was a reminder to Scott rank and position didn't make anyone immune to negative self-talk.

She glanced over at Maho. "By the parameters dictated in General Order 6, we are required to render assistance, Captain," she proceeded to elaborate. "The decision's effectively out of our hands."

"Then we better make sure we're in a condition to render assistance." Maho declared, tapping her combadge. "Takahashi to Rori - better speed up those repairs: We're gonna need to be as together as you can make us sooner than expected."

Ami had found herself on her way back down to Engineering to check on a more detailed status of repairs as the comm came in for her. She closed her eyes and exhaled deeply, “I do not look good in prison orange, really I don’t.” She breathed back in and tapped her comm in return, “Try to take any hits on the starboard side, Captain, I can’t guarantee anything hitting us on the port nacelle not snapping it off outright, but we’ll do our best. How long do I have?”

Maho turned towards Jessica.

"ETA until our arrival?" She asked.

"At our current speed, 45 mins. Traveling at all red alert, expecting Iconian forces ahead."

"Then there's how long you have, Rori:" Maho relayed over her commbadge. "Forty five minutes."

"I'll... Do my best, ma'am." Ami replied, already seeing all of her teams at work and grabbing a kit to get working on somehow getting more power to the shields.

"Sinclair, try to point our starboard side to the brunt of any onslaught." Maho ordered as she assumed her seat. "Red alert!"

With Maho's command, red lights began flashing on the bridge accompanied by the red alert klaxons.

“Yes, ma’am,” Jane said, once again sitting at her helm station. Standard Defensive Pattern Gamma-Sinister. When they would reach their destination, she would fly the ship in a way that kept the port side away from weapons fire as best as possible. It was a limiting move, but she understood it. She would make it work.

Kurumi cleared her throat. "This may sound like a stupid question..." she said simply. "But, how do you expect us to render aid in a tactical situation when most of our weapons are damaged or offline?" she asked. "I mean, I know that I'm good, but unless we start throwing rocks at them, we're just going to tickle them."

She looked down at the tactical console. The Myogi's main phaser arrays that ran along the dorsal and ventral saucer had been damaged to the point where they risked overloading. The only weapons Kurumi had at her disposal were the two ventral strips on the ventral side of the engineering hull.

She also checked the torpedo complement. "I should also mention we're down to only thirteen torpedoes. Three of which are quantum." Kurumi looked over at Maho. "I understand General Order Six, and I agree its the right decision to render aid. However, we can't engage in a tactical engagement at this time Captain. We've been through a major battle, so this may have to be what I like to call a 'Snatch and Grab' sort of situation."

Chisato looked as if she were about to say something, but suddenly hesitated.

"Something on your mind, Commander?" Chrirhc asked, noticing Chisato's hesitation.

Chisato shook her head. "It's far too risky; we've never even attempted something of this caliber-!"

"Well, I'm open to any suggestions:" Maho declared. "Because right now, we're about forty minutes away from being blasted to bits by Heralds."

Chisato glanced over at Chrirhc, who nodded back to her in a gesture of solace. In that moment, she was reminded of his earlier remark back in Five Forward:

"Great Men do not seek power; they have power thrust upon them."

Chisato gulped and turned her attention back to Maho. "Well, it's a bit of a long shot, but perhaps if we can't fight them ourselves, we... well, I'm not sure if there's any real way to put this but "fight fire with fire"?"

"So what are you suggesting, Commander?" Ichika replied. "We hijack an Iconian battleship?"

Chisato bowed her head. "I told you it was on the risky side of-!"

"It might be our only reasonable shot, with the shape we're in." Maho said, turning towards Kurumi.

"Commander, I want you to prepare to push all phasers past their breaking points." She ordered. "I don't care if it causes hull breaches - If we're going down anyways, let's still have some teeth left."

"With all due respect Captain. No." Kurumi said. "I can't follow that order." She crossed her arms and stepped back from the tactical console. "You seem to not be listening to me. When I said that we're down to only the two small ventral phaser banks and that we're low on torpedoes. I mean it." She said firmly. "We cannot go into a tactical situation in this condition. If you order us into another battle, you'll be ordering us all, including yourself and your daughter to their deaths."

"So I apologize captain. But I'm not going to follow a down right stupid order that will end up killing everyone on this ship for nothing." Kurumi stated simply.

Ichika's eyes narrowed "If you're unwilling to do what we ask of you, Commander, then we'll just send you over to the Alita and have Lieutenant Alvaros do it for you," she issued in a low, threatening tone, making clear that this matter was non-negotiable.

"I'll gladly transfer over with Yaeka to the Alita sir. I will also include in my report to Starfleet how both of you ignored the recommendations from your Chief Security/Tactical officer resulting in the loss of this ship and its crew." Kurumi stated clearly not backing down. "My recommendations are to vacate the area and retreat back to Federation space. We might lose a single battle, but we'll still be there to help win the war. In the long run, look at the bigger picture...." she paused and held up two fingers. "Option one. Go in blindly, have our asses kicked and the ship is destroyed along with all hands. This results in it ending here" she said.

She put a single finger down. "Or Option two. Retreat. Save the ship, save the lives of your crew and be around for another battle another day. Take a hit to your ego and honour, but save the lives of those around you." She put the second finger down. She walked up to where Ichika and Maho were on the bridge. "Its my job to offer you suggestions regarding the safety and security of this ship. I have now offered the two options that are available. So, what are you willing to do Captain? Kill us, or save us?"

For some reason the comm link had remained open to Engineering and Ami had heard the entire conversation that was happening on the bridge and while she continued to reroute power through more or less intact conduits, her pathings had slowed as she realized more of the situation going on, "Captain?" She said tentatively, "Commander Ebisuzawa is correct. I'm seeing structural damage across several decks and we might get five or six volleys out of those phaser banks if we max them out before they burn out. We're just as likely to become a liability rather than an asset to Alita, someone else for them to have to save... Or abandon. Shields are at ninety percent right now, but weapons... To get the dorsal phasers back up will take several hours or maybe days, or a shipyard."

Maho let out a long sigh.

"Commander, I am deeply disappointed in you:" She said. "Need I remind you that General Order 6 overrides any selfish desire of self-preservation? We went into this assignment knowing we'd likely be marching to our deaths. To lay down our lives so that others may have a chance to live! I gave you a direct order, and your refusal to follow it now leaves me with no choice:"

Maho tapped her combadge, switching off the frequency with Ami before she could object:

"Lieutenant Avranos:" She called.

"Si, Capitan? (Yes, Captain?)" Came El's voice on the other side.

"Report to the bridge. As of this moment, you are to assume Commander Kurumi Ebisuzawa's duties as Chief Security/Tactical Officer. Bring a team with you to escort the Commander to Transporter Room 2." Maho gave her orders clearly and concisely. "Send another team to Commander Ebisuzawa's quarters to retrieve Yaeka Sakuragi and escort her to the transporter room as well."

"Aye, Capitan; (Captain;) Avranos out." El signed off.

With the frequency closed, Maho turned back to Kurumi:

"Know this isn't personal, Commander; I'm well aware of the risk, and under any other circumstance, I would not be sending my crew to what is inevitably going to be a slaughter; I will do just about every damn thing in my power to mitigate casualties, but my hand is forced in this matter; the needs of the many outnumber the needs of the few- even if those few are our own."

Kurumi didn't respond. She simply turned on a heel and strode off the bridge and into the nearest turbolift.

As Kurumi was led off the bridge, Maho and Ichika turned their attention to Keisuke.

"Best go and join her, Commander," Ichika advised. "Given the odds are going to be stacked against us from the start, it would likely be in Kyoko's best interests if she were taken to a safer location."

There was a flash of doubt in Keisuke's eyes. His gut wanted him to stay on the Myogi with his wife until the end. But that doubt passed quickly, as he now had more than Maho to think about- would it be fair to end his daughter's short existence out of his own selfish desires?

"Of course." Keisuke nodded, turning to Maho. "I'll see you on the other side, dear:"

Before he left, Keisuke planted a passionate kiss on Maho's lips. It might have been his last opportunity to do so.

Briefly stunned by the dopamine rush from the kiss, Maho quickly steadied herself and called after Keisuke as he ascended the ramp to the turbolifts:

"Be sure to take the diaper bag with you: It'll have everything you'll need to care for Kyoko in the short term."

From her console, Jane couldn’t help but smirk.

Months earlier, she’d challenged the Captain when she’d beamed down to Gamma Zednor to rescue Alisha. She’d ended up in the brig with Mia for eighteen days. It had been worth it, to pull Alisha from the arms of death. She’d implied that the Captain, if under orders, wouldn’t do all that was necessary to save those most important to her. I just hope next time it isn’t Keisuke down there. For his sake.

How wrong Jane had been.

“Captain,” she said plainly. “I’d like to request permission to go to the launch bay for a few minutes.” She took a deep breath. “You got to say goodbye to the love of your life before we die. I’d like to have the same opportunity.”

"Permission granted." Maho nodded. "Lieutenant Fujiwara will assume your duties at the helm temporarily."

Jane bowed her head respectfully. “Thank you, Captain.” She rushed off to an available turbolift and disappeared off the bridge.

As Takumi hobbled up to the helm station, taking over from Jane, Ops had received instructions from the Alita:

"The Alita's shared her game plan with us: They're going to drop us at a safe distance before engaging. It's not perfect, but it should buy us some more time."

"Tell the Alita we acknowledge their plan." Maho ordered, clicking a button on her armrest. "Attention, all hands: This is the Captain. We'll be reaching our destination shortly: I don't need reminding that our chances of survival are slim to none, so pray for a miracle... And if for some reason we don't survive this... Know that it has been an honor to serve alongside each and every one of you, and for me to call myself your Captain. Takahashi out."
