The Breen
Timeline: After 'Never Turn Your Back: Myogi (Part 1)'
Previously, on Star Trek: Myogi:
"Is that Kaga?" Dakota asked.
“I do believe it is,” Pippa replied, grinning at their of fortune. “Let’s keep up the pressure! Banshee opened one for us, let’s finish the job.”
And now, the conclusion:
"Captain..." Ops reported. "The indicated Herald vessel is currently outside of our transporter range. We would need to get closer in order to successfully beam the away team aboard."
=A=Engineering, how are we looking so far as structural integrity?=A= Ichika radioed.
=A=Eighty-eight percent, about as good as we’re going to get this side of a shipyard.”=A= Ami replied almost immediately.
Ichika glanced over at Maho. "Shall we risk it, Captain?"
"That won't be necessary, Commander" Maho shook her head. "We have what we need to help cover the Breen's escape."
"Sir?" Ichika questioned.
"It's too dangerous to risk an away team." Maho affirmed, watching a fleet of ships arrive to the battle. "We'd be better off using the fresh ships as cover to get the more damaged ones like the Alita and us clear. Mister Mattias; I need you to instruct the Breen commander on what we need to do."
"On it:" Leonard replied, beginning to compile the instructions in Breen.
"Incoming transmission from the Alita:" Ops reported. "They're relaying the orders of a Commodore Albarn for us to join the fleet's destroyer wings!"
"Not an option." Maho replied. "Hail the Shinigami: I want to talk to Commodre Albarn personally."
"Hailing the Shinigami." Ops reported.
"Captain." The blobde haired Conmoodore said upon appearing on the screen.
"Commodore, we appreciate the assistance." Maho began. "You've greatly increased the odds for a successful retreat."
"With all respect Captain, get to the point," Maka replied as the video feed shook. Obviously her ship had started to take fire.
"Commodore, the best thing we can do is to cut our losses and live to fight another day." Maho persuaded. "There's too many Heralds and too little of us- we'll be torn to pieces if we stay here any longer."
Maka looked off screen for a few seconds. "I agree." She began tapping on the control panel built into the arm of her chair. "I'm giving a general retreat order. See you on the other side of the border. Albarn out "
"Missus Sinclair, bring us about on a heading for Federation space." Maho ordered. "Miss Rori; I'll need the highest warp factor you can give us until the Alita catches up."
"I can give you Warp 7.5 all day long with no problems, 8.5 for about six hours or 9 point 2 for about 30 minutes or so until that nacelle decides it doesn't want to stay with us." Ami's voice came over the comm.
“Course set!” Jane answered. “And confirmed, I can maintain the warp field on your order.”
"Tell the NightKids to land on the Alita- we'll sort everything out once we're clear!" Maho ordered. "Mister Mattias, transmit our heading to the Breen ships."
[Space]
"Myogi to NightKids:" Came the broadcast over the NightKids' headsets. "Alita control has authorized you to land on the Alita, as she is the closest viable landing site."
"Sodak to Jem:" Dakota spoke. "You think we can make it all the way back to the Myogi before the fleet makes the jump?"
"Negative Sodak, we are bingo to Alita." Alisha breathed a sigh of relief as she flashed across the hull of another Herald ship with the rest in tow. At these speeds, the Heralds were proven not to be able to react in time even if a twitch in the wrong direction would just make their shields flicker.
"Aight." Mia's voice came from seemingly nowhere, even though her fighter was tucked in close to Alisha, "Then let's be getting while the getting's good, whatcha say Chaser? Firs' one back gets to pick the holoprogram?"
“Copy that, Banshee!” Pippa said, grinning.
The quartet broke away from the enemy ship and streaked towards the carrier that had called for them and Alisha pushed her throttle to the stops. Behind them, the Heralds launched a series of missiles at the retreating fighters, "Vampire, vampire, break break break." Alisha chanted as the speedy missiles accelerated towards them, "Countermeasures, ladies!"
"Deploying Chaff!" Dakota declared, pulling the release for her chaff.
Several capsules ejected from Dakota's Valkyrie, detonating behind her to blind the Herald missile that had locked onto her, the countermeasure worked as intended, with the missile detonating in the chaff cloud. Though it was still close enough for Dakota to feel it.
Pippa’s craft launched several flares, two of which caught the missiles. She was able to get away.
Mia corkscrewed as she hit her countermeasures and shot off at a new angle, her screen changing as the missiles lost lock on her, "Jem, hit your counters and break hard left."
"Malfunction, malfunction." Alisha's heart raced as the red outlined her countermeasure pod. She still broke hard to the left, but the missiles followed her, rapidly catching up before she suddenly pulled back on the collective and went straight up. Two of the three missiles lost lock and screamed by, the third exploding and more red and yellow markers exploded across her screen. "Shields are down, damage to flight surfaces, ethereal rudder is sluggish... Engines are good."
Four more missiles spat out of the Herald ship as the only target left to it showed it's entire profile and instantly locked onto Jem's fighter. She flipped back over and slowly maneuvered her way back in a heading towards Alita, her eyes watching the approaching missiles as they steadily closed the distance. Alisha Reno swallowed hard as her eyes sought Myogi's blip instead, desperate to see that ship escape before the inevitable. They had five seconds. Four... Three...
Mia Amaro, Lieutenant JG, the unwanted daughter of old parents and air car thief cursed as she turned at bay, goosing her engines past their maximum sustainable level, lowering her target reticle over the incoming missiles and firing desperately at them. One flared and exploded, a second, then she was out of time.
****En route to the Breen****
Alisha was already back in her cockpit, while Jane took another minute to straighten out her uniform. She looked up and smiled when she saw Mia come to see her. “Hey. Thanks for being here for us. Best witness I could’ve asked for.”
Mia rolled her eyes, "I don' blame you for wantin' to get it done early, it's gonna be hairy out there, but we'll keep those bastards offa ya'." Her body posture wasn't one that exhibited more than her normal bravado, mixed with resignation. A bad sign.
“Appreciate it.” She stepped away, heading toward the door, but stopped in her tracks. “I need you to promise me something.”
Mia had started to tighten down the life-support gear and had turned towards her bird, but stopped at Jane's next words, so she turned back, "I'll do whatever I can, chica, but I can't make promises I can't keep."
“I need you to keep this one anyway,” Jane said, looking Mia in the eyes. “She lives, Mia. I don’t care if Myogi is vaporized, I don’t care if the rest of the fleet burns. She lives.” She wiped a tear from her eye. “She’ll hate you for it. She might curse you until her dying day. But that won’t be for decades because she. Lives. Promise me.”
Mia looked back at Jane, "I can't promise even to be alive to try to do that, babe." Mia reached up to cup Jane's cheek gently, then dropped it and looked down at the floor, "I promise I'll do everythin' I can though." She gave a Jane a smile. "If it's possible, I'll get her out.
Jane matched Mia’s smile, but it didn’t quite reach her eyes. “Thank you.” It wasn’t enough, but nothing practical would be, or could be. She kissed Mia’s cheek and pulled her into a tight hug. “Be safe out there.”
Mia squeezed her tight, then her hands lowered to squeeze Jane's rear end, just so that she knew that it was truly Mia, then released her as Jane walked away, "I get her out, you owe me!" She called after the helmswoman, "An' I'll collect!"
****Back In Space****
Mia's eyes hardened as she gauged the last two missiles, one more flared into oblivion as she knew she didn't have enough time to readjust and shoot the last one. "She lives, chica." She whispered as she flipped her Valkyrie on it's side and interposing her own belly between the missile and her friend, then closed her eyes.
The explosion rocked Alisha's fighter, but it kept flying. How had it not hit her? She glanced down at the screen and saw that she was now out of range, approaching Alita quickly. There was Sodak, Chaser... That was it. Her neck wrenched as she tried to look behind her. "Banshee?" She called out, catching the glimpse of wreckage spinning away from where the explosion had been, "Mia?" She asked again, desperation in her voice, "MIA??!!!" She finally screamed into the silence.
"OH, SHIT!" Dakota exclaimed upon realizing what had just happened.
Pippa watched her scopes in silence, tears welling in her eyes as she pushed her thrusters to maximum to get her craft back to the Alita.
[USS Myogi]
From her helm station, Jane’s eyes went wide as the fighter marked Banshee disappeared with a flash from her space traffic control monitor. Oh no. Oh no… Oh fuck… She started to hyperventilate, clutching her console to keep herself steady. “Captain… we’ve lost Lieutenant Amaro.”
"Captain, the Breen ships are breaking off and jumping out, following the heading we've transmitted." Leonard reported. "The Breen commander reports all ships that can still hear have received the message."
Maho gritted her teeth. That likely meant there were ships with damaged comms who would go down not knowing the order to retreat had been given.
"Get us out of here!" Maho declared. "Maximum available warp!"
“Engaging,” Jane said, seeing that Alisha, Pippa, and Dakota were on track to reach the Alita. They’d reconnect later.
At Jane’s input, the Myogi jumped to warp 9.2, away from the battle site.
