1,575 words; about a 8 minute read

Mission: Futou Fukutsu
Location: Richard Rodgers Theater, New York City
Timeline: Friday, 11th April 2397, 18:30 - Stardate 74276.1

Night had fallen over New York City- Once proclaimed as the greatest city on Earth, the city that never slept had stayed in motion even in the Federation era. With the sun down, the iconic New York City Skyline took on new life under the glow of its streetlights and skyscrapers.

On the island of Manhattan, in the city's midtown, a show was about to get started. At the historic Richard Rodgers Theater, this show wasn't new by any means. Mission Log had been a breakout success since its 2394 debut at the historic Broadway venue. With sold out shows being performed eight times a week, Mission Log at the Richard Rodgers Theater was one of the most highly sought after Broadway shows in the Federation, and rumors were swirling that the show's creator and star- Nemona Miranda- was hard at work on a follow-up.

Waiting outside the historic venue was one of the show's producers- sent by Miranda to wait for her important guest to show up. Alex Briggs had worked alongside Miranda to bring the concept that the young librettist had originally written about in her sophomore year of college to Broadway, and was all in on Miranda's next project, still tentatively titled "The Takahashi Mixtape", but likely to be renamed soon. The important guest that he had been sent to wait for was none other than the subject of this project- Captain Maho Takahashi herself. The Starfleet captain that Miranda had been writing a musical about had never seen a Broadway show before, and was unfamiliar with the Broadway world, but Briggs was trusted by Miranda to help explain things to their guest.

As showtime drew nearer, Briggs was starting to doubt if their visitor would arrive on time when at last, the sound and glow of a transporter beam in front of him deposited Captain Maho Takahashi wearing a somewhat form-fitting red cocktail dress covered in red sequins that shimmered in the lights of the theater. It was evident from her appearance that Maho had glammed up for the evening.

"Ah, Captain Takahashi." Briggs greeted, extending a hand for Maho. "I'm Alex Briggs, Miss Miranda sent me to escort you to your seat."

"It's a pleasure to meet you, Mister Briggs." Maho accepted the handshake. "It is a shame that Miss Miranda couldn't be here."

"She's backstage getting ready for the show." Alex explained, glancing at his chronometer. "Which, we should probably get a move on if we want to make it to your box in time for the show to start."

"Then by all means, lead the way." Maho gestured.

Alex led Maho up to the upper box levels to Box E located to the left of the stage. As the highest up and furthest back box along with Box H on the opposite side, it offered one of the least obstructed views of the stage among the box seating. Though it was just Maho and Alex for tonight's show, there was seating in each box for three.

"So, can you give me a rundown on what this show's about before it starts?" Maho asked. "Can't say I've even heard of this show before, let alone seen it."

"Sure:" Alex explained. "So, Mission Log is a slice of life musical set in the Mission District of San Francisco during the Dominion War. It takes place over the span of three days: The day before, the day of, and the day after the Breen attack on Earth. The main character is called Istafli De La Cruz, and she owns a small convenience store in the neighborhood. That's who Miss Miranda will be playing tonight."

"I see," Maho nodded. "And, what inspired her to center this around the Breen attack?"

Before Alex could answer, however, the opening voiceover began playing, indicating that the show was about to start.

[About an hour later]

"Wait, that's it??" Maho exclaimed after the show had seemingly wrapped up, left on a cliffhanger. "I thought they were gonna show the Breen attack?"

Maho's confusion elicited laughter from Alex.

"No, no, just the first act is over." He explained. "With multi-act shows like this, there's usually an intermission. Usually 15 minutes, which is what this show is..."

Alex glanced down at his chronometer.

"Which means, we should have enough time to go meet Miss Miranda, if you're up for it?" He proposed.

"Sure, if that's something that's allowed." Maho accepted.

"Not normally, but you're here as Miss Miranda's guest tonight." Alex elaborated.

"Since she wants me to come to the rehearsal for this new show she's making afterwards, might not be a bad idea to already know her a little bit." Maho said.

Discreetly, Alex led Maho from the box down to the stage door, and entered the backstage areas. They were a flurry of activity as actors were either preparing for the second act, or were taking advantage of the downtime provided by the intermission. Still, Maho could tell that the intermission was just as important to the actors as it was to the audience.

Alex led Maho over to one of the dressing rooms and proceeded to knock on the door.

"Who is it?" A female voice from within called out.

"It's Alex," Alex replied.

The inaudible response from within seemed to be indicative of Alex to come in, for her proceeded to open the dressing room door and peek his head in.

"Sorry to interrupt;, but there's someone here who wants to meet you."

Alex then stepped aside, allowing Maho to get her first up close look at Miranda. Up close, the young woman was as Hispanic as she looked from far away. She was still wearing the same tracksuit she had been onstage in, but she had removed the flat cap, and it was sitting unused on the dressing room desk. She had also unzipped the jacket, revealing the cropped black undershirt she was wearing underneath.

When Nemona and Maho made eye contact, the former's eyes lit up, and her face twisted into one of elation.

"Captain Takahashi!" She greeted excitedly. "So good to finally meet you."

"Likewise, Miss Miranda." Maho replied, accepting a handshake from Nemona.

"Please, call me Nemona." Nemona insisted. "So, how are you enjoying the show so far?"

"Oh, it's incredible." Maho raved. "I can't believe I haven't experienced a Broadway show sooner."

"Well, keep your expectations in check." Nemona advised. "Word is, other shows wish they could be mine." She said with a sly grin.

Even though she spoke with a clear American, light New York accent, there was quite a bit about Miranda that reminded Maho of Tristana. She had similar levels of energy and passion to the Myogi's infamous former security officer.

"I'll be sure to bear that in mind at the next show I attend." Maho couldn't help but smile. Miranda's energy seemed infectious.

"I am glad you stopped by, though:" Nemona said, opening a drawer in the desk and grabbing something from within. "I wanted to give this to you as a thank you for coming out tonight."

Nemona presented Maho with the PADD that she had pulled from the desk.

"What is it?" Maho asked.

"It's the latest version of my Takahashi project." Nemona explained. "Alex and I have been hard at work arranging and composing things. You'll hear a few of them at the rehearsal later tonight. Oh, and there's also a unique replicator file for a Mission Log poster that I ran around before the show and had the cast sign. This way, you can easily replicate it and hang it up in like your ready room or something."

"Well... Thank you." Maho muttered. "I'm sure somebody on my crew is a Mission Log fan, and would love to have such a poster in their quarters."

"Just make sure you don't give them the demos by accident." Nemona insisted. "This show's far from ready for the public to hear. Hell, just last week, Alex finally convinced me that The Takahashi Mixtape is a dumb name, but I'm not ready to give up on the mixtape idea just yet."

"I'm sure I'll hear more about it at some point." Maho nodded, glancing at the chronometer in the dressing room. "As it is, Alex and I should probably be returning back to our seats."

"Unfortunately, we do have a show to finish..." Nemona sighed. "Well, enjoy the rest of your evening; I'll see you at the rehearsal!"

Having made a good first impression with Miranda, Maho and Alex returned to their box and prepared for the second act of the show.

[1 hour lated]

When the house lights came back up, the historic theater erupted in applause. Having now seen Mission Log in it's entirety, Maho saw that there was much to love about it. Starting with Federation optimism before plunging into the devastation wrought by the Breen attack, but ending on a more hopeful note as the Mission District (and San Francisco at large) began to rebuild.

It was no surprise, then, that Maho partook in tge standing ovation as the cast lined up on stage and took a bow before crediting the conductor, who waved to the audience and took his own bow.

But even though the show was over, Maho's evening was not, for she had promised Miranda that she would attend the rehearsal for the Takahashi project.

To be continued...
