Big plans ahead

900 words; about a 5 minute read

Mission: Into Our Past
Location: Drax Prime
Timeline: Friday, 11th April 2397, 12:00 - Stardate 74275.3

The glen was quiet, the light breeze blowing the wild flowers as Krysia sat enjoying what time she had at home before moving onto the newest adventure of her life. Her fingers trailed gently over the petals of the flowers, her eyes turning a vivid shade of violet as she did so. She wouldn’t dare to do it of she was in company, unfortunately her kind were seen as outcasts.

There was one small blessing of moving to a new place to call home, she wouldn’t have to hide her genetics anymore. From what she’d learned of the Federation it was made up of a lot of species from a lot of worlds. They wouldn’t care whether she had a natural affinity with plants, or that her genetics stemmed from a time when genetic manipulation was normal. That was hundreds, if not thousands of years ago, now it was considered to be unnatural and those who possessed the gene were persecuted. The government was even going so far as to try and eradicate the gene altogether, though how that would happen didn’t bare thinking about.

The elders of Drax had decided to try extending their world’s influence, going so far as to try sending out Ambassadors from influential families, Krysia’s included. She would be the first and only Drax in Starfleet, both as an Ambassador and an exchange officer. Her training from Drax Academy was comparable to Starfleet and as such she had been accepted.

Now here she sat enjoying the glen, it would be a while before she was back here again. Her parents had encouraged her to go, to find the freedom to be who she was meant to be without having to worry about the Drax authorities one day discovering her secret, and that of her family.

“Thought I’d find you here.” Her mother’s gentle tones drifted across the glen as she approached Krysia. “This always was your favourite place to come.”

“Who couldn’t like a place like this.” Krys smiled as she looked up at her mother, her eyes a beautiful shade of violet.

“It’s such a shame that you have to hide that here.” Her mother gave her a loving gaze. “It’s unfair that we have to hide who we really are. If it wasn’t for those with the gene, this world would be a baren wasteland instead of the green and luscious world it is.”

“I can’t disagree with that” Krys nodded. “The problem is it’s a genetically modified trait, something outlawed on our world these days. They shouldn’t persecute those who carry the gene, but they do. I dread to think how scientists plan to eradicate the gene.”

“That doesn’t bare thinking about” Her mother agreed with her. “The sooner I know you’re off world and safe the happier I’ll be.”

Krys nodded. “Why don’t you leave Drax? The Federation welcomes all who want to join, at least from what I know of them they do. You could both move to Earth, or there’s a world called Betazed, it’s full of telepaths and empaths just like us.”

“You know why Krysia, our family has influence here. Perhaps in time we’ll be able to do something to help others like ourselves. Even if it has to be in secret.” Her mother answered. “All I need to know is that you will be safe, the Federation protect their own, and you will be one of them soon. No matter what happens in the future I want you to stay safe.”

Krysia gave her mother a worried look, but asked no questions. “I promise no matter what I’ll stay safe. I am the future of our family.”

Her mother nodded giving her a bright smile. “Your father and I are due off world tomorrow, our ship is heading out on a rim survey. They want to see if the newly discovered moon is capable of supporting life.”

“Fingers crossed then” Krys grinned as she ran her fingers over the petals of a nearby flower. “I’ll miss this, sitting here in the glen enjoying the feel of the air on my face, and the sound of the sea below.”

“There will be other worlds for you to enjoy, go and see what’s out there.” Her mother smiled as she turned to look at her husband who was waving her back. “We’ll see you back at the house for dinner.”

Krys nodded. “I won’t be long, just a few more minutes then I’ll join you.” She watched her mother go wondering just what the future really held for them all.

~ A few hours later ~

Dinner over Krys was busy packing her things ready to head out to Federation territory. Her current ship would take her to the edge of Drax territory, after that she had transport arranged to take her the rest of the way. It would be a little while before she got to her destination, something a high warp starship could do in a few days. Not that she minded, she would need the time to adjust to not being amongst telepaths all the time.

It was going to be a whole new learning curve from here on out, but she was definitely up for the challenge.
