Mission: The Next Myogi
Location: USS Myogi-A

By the time the shuttle Usagi touched down in the Myogi-A's shuttlebay, Maho's condition had deteriorated considerably. The contractions were getting closer together and lasting longer. Ryosuke had hitched a ride in the crowded shuttle, utilizing his medical experience to keep track of his sister-in-law's contractions. The labor was progressing at a normal rate, but the sooner they could get her to a sickbay, the better.

Doctor Zephyrin had called her sickbay ahead to have a medical team waiting for them when they touched down. So, as the charred ramp lowered down onto the sterile deck of the shuttlebay, the medical team that had been requested on the ride over was already at hand.

"Get this woman to sickbay immediately." Ryosuke instructed before turning to his brother. "I need to go alert Commander Anzai to what's happening. I'll be down there as soon as possible."

"Take your time, Ry-kun..." Maho groaned sarcastically. "I'm only having a frickin' BABY here!"

"Go." Keisuke nodded in the affirmative.

"Don't wait on my account!" Ryosuke said before breaking off from the group heading to sickbay to head to the bridge.

“You’ve got this, Captain!” Jane called from the rear of the group. She fell behind, not wanting to infringe upon what would hopefully be a magical moment for the family.

She took the XO by the shoulder to hold her back a quick second. “I’ll keep ready for the flight back. You’ve got her, yeah?”

"That goes without saying, Lieutenant," Ichika nodded in the Affirmative.

Minerva led the way to sickbay, hollering at anyone in the halls to move to the sides and make a hole, finally arriving at the main doors and standing to the side as the motley procession filed in, "Procedure bay 1 please, she informed the nurse who'd come to question why these unfamiliar people were coming in. One of the other nurses came over and took the jacket that Minerva had taken off on the way and also the rest of her accoutrements, "Get a bassinette ready, full setup, we're going to want a full watch on vitals on the baby while they're here." She patted the nurse's arm and was off towards the procedure bay with the Captain.

Kael hummed as he put the final touches on the PADD he brought over. "Your prognosis is excellent, Captain. Remember to breathe as its easy to forget" he made a few final taps as the Captain was being prepared for the first stage of labor. "The Captain is a bit dehydrated so I'd address that first." He took out an isolinear chip and handed it to Minerva. "Scans for our bay in case you need a reference. Other than that, good luck lieutenant."

"And just where do you think you're going, Doctor?" Minerva asked him even as she accepted the chip and moved to slip it into the proper slot on the console before she grabbed a sterilizer and ran it over her hands before putting on a pair of gloves, "Please do treat the dehydration, I'd recommend an IV of saline with lactated ringers and a calcium supplement on drip for that, but this is your Captain, I would appreciate you being here to assist if something comes up."

''Too many cooks spoil the broth lieutenant" Kael elaborated. "She is my patient, a patient a transferred to your bay. If something does come up you should trust your own people to handle it before inviting strangers in. And this delivery room already has twice as many people in it as I'd tolerate to begin with. You'll do fine"

Minerva smile at the Captain, "As Doctor Ryo mentioned, breathing is quite possibly the most important thing you can do right now. The head has dropped, umbilical is out of the way and we're just about ready to get going." She glanced at the readout, which was updating the vitals constantly, "Looks like contractions are about a minute apart, cervix is dilated at eight centimeters, blood pressure is a bit high, but understandable. If you'd like an epidural, it's a bit late, but I'd feel comfortable administering one, Maho."

"Epidural?" Maho asked. Understandably, remembering just what an epidural was was the last thing on her mind. "Wait a minute, is this even safe? I'm 35 weeks. Is she going to be able to survive?"

"Absolutely, Maho," Minerva stated in her most soothing voice, "We'll do a full scan right away, but you're only four weeks from being full term, what we call a 'late preterm' birth. Everything in your child's body is already developed almost completely, with the lungs in the final stage. From this point on, mostly all they'll be doing is putting on a bit of body fat. To combat that, we'll make sure there's an external heat source to maintain body temperature. If the lungs still need some additional help, we can help that along with a hypo, no danger whatsoever."

"Okay..." Maho took a couple of deep breaths. "But just in case, what is your NICU capacity on this ship?"

With the Myogi-A being of a similar size to her own ship, she was expecting that advancements would be light, but she suspected that her daughter spending time in the NICU might wind up being a thing regardless.

Bree couldn’t believe this moment was finally here. She wished circumstances could be different, but she also knew the likelihood of Maho giving birth in the serenity of her cabin while the ship was on some routine mission was wishful thinking all along. Still, she had been working with the expectant couple for some time now preparing them for the birth, and she didn’t want to assume she was no longer needed or wanted simply because Maho was surrounded by a medical team.

“Doctor,” Bree spoke up, addressing Minerva, but also switching her gaze back-and-forth between the doctor and Maho, “With the Captain’s and your permission, I’d like to stay and help with the delivery. I’ve been working with the captain and her husband to prepare them for the delivery, and while these weren’t exactly they planned, I’d like to help them honor their wishes as much as is reasonably possible.“

To be continued...
