Mission:
The Next Myogi
Location: USS Myogi-A
Timeline: After 'Myogi: The Next Generation (Part 1)'
Previously, on Star Trek: Myogi:
Bree couldn’t believe this moment was finally here. She wished circumstances could be different, but she also knew the likelihood of Maho giving birth in the serenity of her cabin while the ship was on some routine mission was wishful thinking all along. Still, she had been working with the expectant couple for some time now preparing them for the birth, and she didn’t want to assume she was no longer needed or wanted simply because Maho was surrounded by a medical team.
“Doctor,” Bree spoke up, addressing Minerva, but also switching her gaze back-and-forth between the doctor and Maho, “With the Captain’s and your permission, I’d like to stay and help with the delivery. I’ve been working with the captain and her husband to prepare them for the delivery, and while these weren’t exactly they planned, I’d like to help them honor their wishes as much as is reasonably possible.“
And now, the continuation:
“We have some of the best medical facilities right here within Starfleet’s hands.” Minerva reassured Maho, “I have one of my people already setting up a temporary bassinet support module, then they’re going to convert one of the suites into a NICU setup. We may not be too far in ‘the future’ as you are, Maho, but we do have all of the bells and whistles here.” She turned her attention to Bree, “As for you, so long as Maho here is okay with it, you’re welcome to stay. You all know her better than I do, I’m more the stranger, but my Captain would kill me if anything went wrong here.”
"It's okay." Maho declared, turning to Bree. "You've really stepped up in being here for me, helping me rehearse and all that, I'd expect you to be here too..."
Maho was cut off as another contraction hit, the minute or so that it lasted feeling like a small eternity as Maho struggled to figure out whether to grimace through the pain or scream.
"Easy there, Maho," Ichika whispered soothingly. "Deep breaths, remember?"
"Right." Maho gasped as soon as the pain subsided. She looked to the doctors around her. "I think I'm ready to push..."
Without examining Maho, Bree couldn’t be sure if if she was fully dilated and if the baby was low enough in Maho’s pelvis to make pushing most productive, but positioned by her side, Scott was focused on keeping Maho as calm as possible. Bree understood that when it was time to push, there would be no denying it. “On a scale of one to 10, how much pressure are you feeling?”
Scott was already thinking about helping Maho get into a better position to take advantage of gravity. Even if it was a bit early for her to start pushing, there was no reason she couldn’t assume a more upright position just to help her soon to be born daughter to descend. She saw no reason to keep her in a position that would feel like pushing a boulder uphill if they could help it.
"Ugh... Probably about a 6?" Maho responded.
"Is a six bad?" Ichika asked, glancing up at Brennyn.
"Not at all," Bree reassured. "It could just mean it isn't quite time to push yet. The Captain and I discussed what that pressure feels like and it doesn't sound like she's there at this moment, but with Dr. Zephyrim's permission and yours, Captain, I was thinking we could see about getting you in a more upright position to help your daughter to descend. Maybe we could try a birth stool? This would allow me to massage your lower back as well. Of course, if you felt up to it, walking with support can also help move things along."
Considering her options, Maho turned towards Minerva.
"Well... Since I'm on a different ship: Care to show me around whatever deck we're on?" She asked.
Ichika stared at Maho like she'd lost her marbles. "Captain, you can't be serious!"
She stole a nervous glance in Brennyn's direction. "Please tell me that this isn't a serious consideration, Counselor?"
"One misstep becomes a thousand years of regret" Kael quoted an old poem. "I think you'll find that walking will be unbearable in your state Captain. Lieutenant Zephyrin already informed you of the position of your baby. I'd stay put if I were you." He looked around the already crowded delivery room and stopped himself from instinctively pressing his combadge. "Commander" He said in a low enough voice. "We should see that the father is present as well."
"We probably have another hour or two before we're realistically going to see your new addition, Captain, that should be plenty of time if your husband or father of the the child, if they're different, is on your ship." She glanced over at Kael, then back to Maho, "I think we can compromise with Doctor Ryo, ma'am, how about I show you around our sickbay, that way if you get too tired out or in additional discomfort, we're still in the right place?"
"What do you think, babe?" Keisuke asked, choosing to ignore the other doctor's comments about him still being back on their ship.
Maho turned towards Brennyn.
"If that's going to be what helps the baby drop, then I'm for it." She said.
Ichika pinched her nose and sighed. "I have a bad feeling about this..."
To Ichika, Bree offered, "I know this isn't the way any of this was supposed to go, but the Captain is in good hands, Commander. If you're going to be here for this process, staying positive is the best thing you can do for the Captain and her daughter."
To Maho, Bree offered, "If you become too uncomfortable or the little one doesn't like it, we can always do something else. I'm certain Dr. Zephyrin has your vitals and your daughter's vitals under continuous monitoring, so we'll know if we need to change plans, but for right now, if Dr. Z has no objections or specific suggestions for changing this little one's position, the pain might be a little easier to tolerate if we help you move and change position rather than keep you stuck in one spot." She placed a reassuring hand on Maho's shoulder. "You've got this and all of us have the two of you."
She looked to Minerva. "Doctor, what is the baby's current presentation? Depending on your scans, there might be some positions that would be better than others. For moving things along and keeping the Captain more comfortable. Maybe we can get her to a space for now where we can lower the lights a bit and offer a bit more privacy?"
"I believe a walk around sickbay wouldn't hurt at all." Minerva pointed out, which was what she'd said a couple minutes before, but shrugged. These were people who cared about their Captain and she'd be willing to repeat several times. "If your Captain goes into frank labor, we'll have her right here and back in this room in a matter of seconds. There is no danger in the slightest."
