Mission:
The Breen
Location: USS Myogi - Conference Room, Deck 1
Timeline: After 'Times Like These (Part 2)'
Previously, on Star Trek: Myogi:
"This is the Khourani system:" Maho introduced the system to the crew. "Recent intelligence reports seem to confirm what is listed in the database that Ry-kun... I mean, Captain Takahashi, has sent back with us; and that the Iconians appear to either be building or have already built a weapons facility in the system with the intent of producing weapons of mass destruction. Given the at this facility is what doomed the alternate timeline we saw, Starfleet has deemed the Khourani system a high priority target. There is, however, one small hiccup to this plan:"
Maho pressed another button, and above the holographic image of the Khourani system appeared a dreaded symbol: That of the Breen Confederacy. The elusive, warlike government that caused much destruction during the Dominion War.
"The Khourani system is located deep within Breen space." Maho stated.
And now, the continuation:
Bree exhaled slowly. “So we’re headed into Breen space.” It was a statement, not a question.
"When winter comes, can spring be far behind?" Kael murmured, though his tone suggested spring was, in fact, very far behind. "The Breen maintain a body temperature of minus twenty degrees. Their ships and dwellings will be environmentally matched. The quartermaster should be informed that our standard thermal underlayers are insufficient against that"
"That is presuming, of course, that it would behoove us to try and confront them in the first place," Ichika was quick to point out. "Given their policies of aggressive isolationism, I wouldn't put it past them to view an incursion into their space- for whatever reason- as an act of war."
"And considering we're already at war, it would be ill-advised for us to fight one on two fronts." Liz added. "It could stretch our resources to the same breaking point as that alternate future."
"Then we need to make sure that news of our incursion doesn't get out if we go in." Ami stated as she popped her head out of the Jeffries Tube she'd been working in, "Or make the Breen think we're one of them. Obviously we can't dress Myogi up as one of them, but what if we play as being a captured starship? Anyone know any of the Breen language?"
"Very little, frustratingly." Maho sighed. "The Klingons, Romulans, and Cardassians have all been subpoenaed for their knowledge of the Breen language, but I suspect all that is collectively known about it relates to military tactics."
"The Cardassians were technically allied to the Breen during the Dominion War." Chrirhc pointed out. "Whatever knowledge of the Breen that the Founders didn't destroy could be of use."
"Approximately how long do you reckon it'll take us to get that information from the Cardassians, Commander?" Ichika inquired.
"At present, I'm still waiting on Starfleet Intelligence to drop the files on my desk." Chrirhc sighed. "Which is one of the reasons why I've asked for Commander Nishikigi's help on this matter." He indicated Chisato. "For better or worse, or perhaps it's because Intel knows they can drag their heels with me, Commander Nishikigi has a... Special way of getting the information she needs in a... timely manner."
Their guest grinned mischeviously.
Kurumi listened intently before making her own comment. "The Breen energy dampner weapon could be a serious problem." She stated. "I knpw we've adapted our shields to compensate, however its been over twenty years since the Federation and The Breen had a hostile encounter. Much like us, they've had twenty years to adapt and make improvements."
Kurumi looked over at Ami, then to Maho. "I think it would be a good idea to implement some counter measures in case their energy dampener weapon is effective against us. Starfleet under-estimated The Breen in the Dominion War, lets try and not repeat old mistakes."
"That is why I have ordered a complete overhaul of our shield generators." Maho replied. "It wasn't just for the Heralds."
"I'm not just working on overhauling the generators, but working to alter them as well." Ami nodded, "It's going to put more of a strain on our particle shielding, but by increasing the density it should at least minimize any effect if it impacts the hull. If we have the time, I want to build a nanite army to apply some old-fashioned titanium in a thin layer to reduce connectivity and keep their dampener from taking any more effect than it has to."
"What counter measures would you recommend, Commander?" Ichika asked.
"I can make modifications to the shields that may help." Kurumi stated. "Usually our shields absorb impacts from energy weapons, however instead of absorbing them, we can use them to bounce it off, or re-direct the energy elsewhere." she suggested.
"I'd also recommend we compartmentalize our power systems." Ami added, "One section can go down, but not the whole ship. Physical breakers, multiple failsafes, I can do that with my team and it should also make any power restoration faster if we lose it."
“Smart idea,” Jane offered. “Systems do so often fail as one. Compartmentalizations like that might mean we lose some maneuverability but not all sublight systems. I can do a lot with half an engine and a smattering of RCS thrusters, but I can’t do much with all systems down.”
"In addition to all of the ideas discussed, we must also prepare for the possibility of getting boarded by the Breen." Maho said, turning to Kurumi and Liz. "I want Security and Marines to work together on this. I need not bring up what happened when Heralds boarded us, do I?"
"Not at all, Captain." Liz replied, blushing. "If I may suggest, though, perhaps it might benefit us to hold active boarding drills. It would better prepare us for the real thing."
Kurumi nodded in agreement. "I agree. We should be prepared. The Breen don't board ships and then hold us at stun. In the Dominion War, they would shoot to kill, simple as."
"Perhaps it might also behoove us to procure a cloaking device for this mission." Chrirhc suggested. "Poking around at the yard's manifests, I couldn't help but notice that there are several Klingon vessels in the yard that the Empire has ordered to be broken up. Maybe we could try and salvage a cloaking device from one of those ships?"
"Already taken care of," their guest butted in. "An ambassador for the Empire managed to pull some strings with the High Council and have them loan us a set of cloaking devices from their old B'Rel fleet. In his words, he said he owes Captain Takahashi a favor for helping to apprehend the, quote, "dishonorable pirate Iwaki", end quote."
