5 Years!

Myogi5YearsNEW.png

Monday, March 22, 2021 at 6:43 PM GMT. According to our NOVA, that is the precise moment that our sim was founded Five Years ago today! With everything this sim has been through, including a rather turbulent fleet change before we were even ONE year old, let alone Five, there were times I had my doubts that we'd make it to five years. Half a decade is an incredible milestone for a Star Trek sim to hit, especially given that most Star Trek sims that start up usually don't make it to their first anniversary, so for one to last five years shows that it has quite the staying power!

Of course, a NOVA website turning five years old wouldn't at all be possible without an eager group of writers who love to write together. I often use the term USS Myogi Family to show that we are just as much of one as the Tokyo is, and it's true! I have been proud to call this ship my home for the last five years, and all of you my family. So, whether you've been with us for five months or five years, welcome to the family Myogi! (Okay, I'll stop...)

Last year, to celebrate the Tokyo's Tenth Anniversary, I told the story of how the Myogi came to be, but it was a story that I split into two parts: The Myogi's origins as an NPC ship on the Tokyo sim to celebrate the Tokyo's big anniversary, then our sim history to celebrate our own anniversary. So, for our Fifth Anniversary, I wanted to compile the complete story into one place. Stick with me, though, because I will be adding on the additional material that we wrote throughout 2025!

USS Myogi: The Complete Saga

So, our story begins not in 2015, but in early 2020, when COVID-19 was still a localized outbreak in Asia. I had been working at a dead end retail job for over a year and a half, and in that time, I had been slowly getting into anime. Girls Und Panzer is the series that popped my anime cherry.

One day, I was searching the web for Girls Und Panzer images when I stumbled across an image of a character from the series wearing a Starfleet uniform. Intrigued, I followed the link to the website and discovered the hobby of simming purely by accident! On the website from the google image search, I saw 'Theta Fleet' mentioned a few times, and I believe 'thetafleet.net' was in the site's URL. So, I investigated further, and found out that the fleet which this game was attached to had many different games to offer.

The two games that I found myself consistently drawn to were the USS Missouri (which I did eventually join... Had my heart broken on, and eventually took up the mantle for, but... That's a story for another day) and the USS Tokyo. However, as the Missouri didn't have the open position that I was eyeballing on Tokyo, I decided to apply there instead, creating a character based on my latest anime obsession at the time (and to some extent, it still is) Initial D. And in the process, I met the man who had made the avatar that had sent me down this rabbit hole to begin with.

I had some good fun on Tokyo, even if I wound up making some rookie mistakes that pissed off a few of the players at the time. Some later forgave me for it, while others likely still resent me to this day over it. As it turns out, I had joined right at the tail end of the Tokyo's first season, and my character had been thrust into a chaotic world which he didn't trust. So, when the vague plans for season 2 were shared, I expressed interest in getting his previous assignment involved in the events to help make him see reason. Said previous assignment was named the USS Myogi, and as it was my idea, I decided to make her into a New Orleans class ship.

Of course, plans changed as material was written, and somehow my character found himself 'on the wrong side of heaven, and the righteous side of hell.' (Yeah, I was also getting into Five Finger Death Punch at the time.) The circumstances eventually became so dire that the only way to save my character didn't organically make sense for him. Like it or not, if I wanted to continue, I would need to draw up a new character and scrap my old one.

Which left me with a bit of a dilemma: I had a fairly developed NPC ship ready to partake in future events, but said future events would not be possible with my current cast of characters. Then, a certain real life event which I have covered in previous news items happened, and I decided that there was enough material to work with that the Myogi could no longer be contained within the confines of the Tokyo sim, and it was time for the Myogi to become it's own sim.

I first expressed my interest in potentially developing the Myogi into a full-fledged sim in about early March 2021 after I had been writing on the Tokyo for a solid year. At that time, I knew hardly anything about the larger simming community, and had only just recently attended the inaugural Babel Conference. So, naturally, I applied to start up a sim right here in Theta Fleet where I knew most everyone. However, there was just one problem, I had no command experience at the time, and for this reason, my application was turned down. But not before I was pointed to Pegasus Fleet, whom I was told was more likely to take chances on first time COs. So that's exactly where I went: I popped into their Discord to scope them out, and got pulled right into the middle of the action, and before I knew it, I had put in an application to start up a new command in Pegasus Fleet.

There were some concerns about the answer I gave on the application relating to me disagreeing with a decision the Admiralty makes, and what I would do. I assured them that I had given my answer assuming a worst case scenario, and that appeased them for the time being. (Though, subtle foreshadowing this totally is not)

So, as I took the Pegasus Fleet COAL course (if you know, you know ;)), I began to set up the site. Now, the COAL module where I did this had specifically instructed me not to worry about site skins and rank sets. Safe to say, I had some outside help from none other than Commander Ebisuzawa, who literally walked me through how to do it step by step, and soon, I had the earliest iteration of the Myogi's Iona skin up on the site. It was barely modified from a stock Iona skin at the time, but it was a damn sight prettier than the stock skins, and I absolutely loved it! As time has gone on, and I've grown more confident with FTP, I've implemented small improvements to enhance the experience, but the spirit of that early skin is still very much present.

So, there I was with a captain character whom before that point I had barely written any material for, and was more or less a blank slate, and a 50 something year old hand me down ship that, despite having undergone a fairly recent refurbishment, was still a relic from a bygone era of Starfleet. I put them together, and the Myogi was born! If only I knew then what I was getting myself into, as this sim would not only go on to change the way I write, but also forge lasting friendships crossing borders and bridging oceans.

Pilot Episode

So, the Myogi sim kicked off with our pilot episode; "Handling the Fallout." And to call it a success is an understatement; even though it took our entire first year to write!

STM_Handling_the_Fallout.jpg

Now, unfortunately, our pilot episode was impacted by Pegasus Fleet's rules that I couldn't start out at the rank of Captain. So, I decided to write it into the lore that Maho was temporarily demoted to Commander and was placed under investigation for her potential involvement in the Trial of Captain Taiga Aisaka. Much like how the Tokyo wasn't originally meant to be Taiga's, the Myogi wasn't originally meant to become Maho's, but in light of the Tokyo mission "Allegations", the Myogi became embroiled in scandal, and Maho was selected to succeed the Myogi's longtime captain, Tanaka Miyahara. However, the majority of Miyahara's crew were completely gutted; reassigned among the fleet. Despite these setbacks, Maho somehow managed to get the ship out of spacedock and start our adventure!

Unfortunately, during our pilot episode, the Myogi left Pegasus Fleet after some allegations were brought against me that I was positively promoting pedophilia. I was so completely disgusted by the false allegations that when the Myogi left, I withdrew my presence from Pegasus Fleet entirely, never to return. I had always intended to migrate the Myogi to Theta Fleet eventually, but the allegations forced me to enact that contingency on an accelerated timetable.

Season 1

After our relocation to Theta Fleet, we wrapped up our pilot episode, and began season 1. Because of Theta Fleet's more lenient policy in regards to promoting oneself to Captain, Maho was found innocent and restored to her former rank.

STM_Trade_Troubles_(with_Seiji).jpg

Mission two saw the Myogi hunt down the rogue Starfleet ship USS Nikko, commanded by the renegade Seiji Iwaki. The Nikko was terrorizing Klingon shipping, which was pissing off the Empire, who were threatening war with the Federation. After a brief firefight, we boarded the Nikko and apprehended Commander Iwaki. This was definitely an action-packed first mission, and did not disappoint!

STM_Insurrection.jpg

However, while en route back to Sol, something horrible happened: The Myogi's former Commanding Officer, Tanaka Miyahara; had used his massive, almost cult-like following to organize a rally in San Francisco to "Save the Federation" by protesting the outcome of Taiga's trial. Miyahara told his supporters that they were going to walk down the Golden Gate Bridge to Starfleet Headquarters to make their voices "peacefully and patriotically heard." But that wasn't what happened: Instead, the angry mob overwhelmed Starfleet's defenses and stormed Starfleet Headquarters. All the while Miyahara sat back and watched it happen.

This was the planned "sim-changing mission." A mission that I knew would controversial, as it took direct inspiration from the January 6, 2021 attack on the United States Capitol. This mission I consider to be my way of processing that event by having something similar happen in a Star Trek setting. As a reward for bearing with me, characters who were still active at the time of this mission's conclusion were awarded a promotion in rank. Though some of them "took the promotion and ran", most are still aboard today!

STM_The_Fast_The_Fleet_(small).jpg

Mission four saw the Myogi assigned to transport two "important guests" to Beta Antares Fleet Yards, contrary to the ship being expected to "stand down" following the attack on Starfleet Headquarters. However, the guests' identities were withheld from Captain Takahashi so she wouldn't back out on the assignment. Knowing the Myogi would be a priority target due to its past association with Miyahara, Captain Takahashi decides to recruit the assistance of two of the Myogi's sister ships, the USS Haruna and USS Akina. However, the Haruna's captain; Shimakaze Zh'gero (who was also Maho's rival in the Academy) only agrees to cooperate if Maho and her crew can beat her in a "contest of teamwork, courage, and sacrifice" in a setting familiar to Maho- a no-holds-barred touge race! Deciding that this would be a nice way to improve the crew's morale, Maho accepts the challenge and forms the USS Myogi NightKids, with Project D's double aces themselves as instructors! This mission also saw the return of Takeshi Nakazato as a pinch driver to battle the Haruna's Third Officer; Takeshi's former counterpart. He is also the one who brought Maho's rivalry with Shimakaze to the crew's attention (despite promising Maho he wouldn't) the night before the race. This mission showcased Maho's competitive side, and it all came down to an epic R32 vs R32 shootout between Captain Takahashi and Captain Zh'gero, which led to Maho blowing her engine to win! At present, it is unknown if Takeshi will ever return following this mission.

It was during this mission that the Tokyo really started popping off, and when my attempts to slow it back down failed, I decided that the only course of action was to speed the Myogi up. And the conclusion of this mission saw the implementation of sweeping changes to activity requirements, some of which are still in effect today.

STM_Operation_Tokyo_Return_(Updated_Patch).jpg

Mission five saw Maho's worst fears confirmed: The "important guests" she was assigned to transport were Captain Taiga Aisaka and Lieutenant Commander Ryuuji Takasu. Operation Tokyo Return, despite its simple concept, turned out to be a rather intense mission, as Maho and Taiga's rivalry was put on full public display, all while the terrorists that attacked Starfleet Headquarters were still at large. This mission brought out Maho's violent side, and showcased just how far she was willing to go to get a leg up on Taiga, nearly culminating in the destruction of the Myogi!

Fun fact, the ending of this mission was written almost a full year prior on Tokyo! Can you see why I decided a faster pace was necessary?

This brings us to Season 2, which we are currently in the process of wrapping up:

Season 2

STM_Junichi_Koyama_(uniform_corrected).jpg

So, remember those allegations of pedophilia that caused our abrupt exit from Pegasus Fleet? Well, I may have had the idea to take them to the extreme. And as a result, this mission came about. And just for extra flavoring, why not tie it back to a mission from Tokyo? What could possibly go wrong?

Season 2 started with a time jump. One month after the end of Season 1. In the weeks following the attack on Starfleet Headquarters, multiple Federation member worlds aligned politically with the terrorists declared secession from the Federation, forming an alternative government called the Confederacy of Independent Planets. And surprise, surprise; Miyahara was unanimously elected to lead the Confederacy.

We pick up with the Myogi being dispatched to the Gamma Zednor system; one of the latest such systems looking to leave the Federation following the destruction of a Federation outpost. We found out that there was more to the system than the Tokyo mission had led us to believe; as Gamma Zednor was in the middle of a 24th century version of Jim Crow or Apartheid. As Gamma Zednor's xenophobic governor, Ambrose Hartley, sought to reduce the rights of Japanese descended citizens to those of common cattle. Once we had established beyond a doubt that Hartley couldn't be reasoned with, the only way we could stop the Confederacy from gaining another member world was to remove Hartley from the picture. This mission, we also met Yaeka Sakuragi- one of the sole survivors of the Sakuragi family who were some of Hartley's most outspoken political opponents. Yaeka would quickly form a bond with Commander Ebisuzawa, and would go on to have the Myogi's long-standing 'no civilians' policy, which had been in place since her recommissioning, repealed.

STM_Captains_and_Contraband.jpg

Our second episode of Season 2 saw another time jump. Three more months pass and Maho's pregnancy is now in a more advanced state. Thanks to some data that was recovered the previous mission, it's been discovered that the Federal Rheuysian Republic- a world that's been staunchly loyal to the Federation since the start of this crisis- has secretly been supplying arms to the Confederacy. And for it's first substantial mission since Gamma Zednor, the Myogi was assigned to present the evidence discovered to the Rheuysian Reichstag. Of course, as seems to be the case with the Myogi- nothing is as simple as it seems: The fleet mate we're paired up with this mission- the USS Kaga- picks up a distress call from a Rheuysian colony under attack. The Kaga discovers the Elachi to be behind it, and barely lives to tell the tale. And if that wasn't enough, the Federation's president, Sinisiub Pallis, arrives to personally oversee the talks. However, it is the perfect scenario for an Elachi ambush!

STM_Indivisible.jpg

Following the dramatic cliffhanger that the last mission concluded on, the Federation finally had enough of Miyahara's games, and Starfleet along with their Inuto and Rheuysian allies, mounted a major offensive against the Confederate Capital of Braxus. The Battle of Braxus saw Miyahara defeated and killed and the Confederacy forced into capitulation. But not before a certain shadowy figure revealed themselves...

During the conclusion of our abridged Season 2, a few notable things happened out of character that affected the operations of our sim: For one, we finally overcame the last hurdle in our transition from a game with modest activity to a fast-paced game. In a show of good faith to you guys, I repealed a long-standing, controversial policy that had been in place since the conclusion of The Fast & The Fleet during Season 1, and that was our Participation Points policy: A points system designed to encourage players to play the game in order to retain their positions. By the time Captains and Contraband had concluded, I felt that this policy had served its purpose as a tool of transition and did away with it!

Second, about a month into writing Indivisible, the Myogi was given its third and current domain: myogi.harperhold.com. This switch was made from research that a .com domain was less prone to spoofing than a .net domain, which is what we previously had. While the switch has come with its downsides (I cannot access the site on public wi-fi without a VPN, for instance), the amount of spam emails that I've gotten from our completely disabled contact form has dropped drastically. (Probably because the site itself is now getting flagged as a phishing site)

Season 3

STM_The_Next_Myogi.jpg

So, Season 3 began with a different tone: Amid rising tensions with the recently-returned Iconian Empire, the Myogi and the Akagi are attacked by Heralds. During the battle, the Akagi is destroyed, the Myogi takes heavy damage, and a mysterious rift suddenly opens in the middle of the battle. Intending to use the rift to hide and regroup, Captain Takahashi instead takes her crew three years into the future to the beginning of the 25th century. The biggest indicator to this is the presence of a successor Myogi: NCC-65918-A, commanded by Captain Ryosuke Takahashi, Maho's brother in law.

During this mission, Maho finally gave birth to her daughter, Kyoko, and we learn that things have not gone well in this future. With our ship missing, the Khitomer Alliance had been in a protracted war against the Iconians called the "Great Iconian War", one which the alliance was losing each day. In a desperate last stand, Captain Ryosuke sacrifices his ship, his crew, and his life to return us to the present.

Speaking of the present:

STM_The_Breen.jpg

As it turns out, Ryosuke sent us home with a lot more than just the hope that we have a crucial role to play in the Iconian War, as we discovered a comprehensive database on the Iconians uploaded into our ship's computer core, and along with it, the location of an Iconian weapons facility where the protomatter bombs to wreak so much devastation in the alternate timeline were manufactured. And our current mission is to destroy that facility, even though it's located deep within Breen space...

Stats:

Last year, I shared some of our stats for our anniversary. So, let's see how those stats have evolved over the last year:

Total Posts: 529 (This pushes our average to a little more than 8 posts a month over five years, but stil maintaining over 2 posts a week in the same time period.)
Total Words: 764,191 (This pushes us closer to doubling Tolkein's "Lord of the Rings" trilogy at 480,000 words, and to completing J.K. Rowling's "Harry Potter" series at 1,084,170 words.)
Total Characters: 80
Total Players: 22

About what was to be expected only factoring in a single year's worth of writing, but not too shabby.

Awards:

Just before this year's Khitomer Conference, I popped back into Pegasus Fleet's Discord and asked about the two awards that we won during our time there, and I'm happy to report that I have recovered the images for the two awards that we won in Pegasus Fleet, and they can be found displayed on our sim page, found here!

Over the last five years, across Pegasus and Theta Fleet, and including broader community recognition, we have won a staggering 93 different awards, by my best count!

The State of NuTrek:

Last year, I shared my top five favorite posts. Since my opinions are unlikely to have changed over the past year, I thought instead I'd do a fun little compare and contrast. When the Myogi was founded, NuTrek was just starting to expand, and wasn't anywhere near the behemoth that it is today. So, let's take a look back, and see where NuTrek was when the Myogi was first founded, versus now:

When the Myogi was founded (In 2021):

When the Myogi was founded, in addition to all the media that comprise what's known as "Classic Trek", including TOS, TAS, TNG, DS9, VOY, ENT, the six TOS movies and four TNG movies, as well as the "J.J." or "Kelvin" trilogy of films, the entity now known as "NuTrek" looked a little something like this:

When the Myogi was founded, we had:

-3 Seasons of Star Trek: Discovery
-1 Season of Star Trek: Picard
-1 Season of Star Trek: Lower Decks

During our sim's founding year, we saw:

-7 Episodes of Star Trek: Discovery Season 4
-Star Trek: Lower Decks Season 2
-4 Episodes of Star Trek: Prodigy Season 1

In the years that followed: (2021-Present)

Over the last five years we have seen an explosion of NuTrek Content: At the time of writing, NuTrek looks something a bit like this:

Since the Myogi's founding, we have seen:

-2 More Seasons of Star Trek: Discovery (unfortunately)
-2 More Seasons of Star Trek: Picard
-4 More Seasons of Star Trek: Lower Decks
-2 Seasons of Star Trek: Prodigy
-3 Seasons of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds
-1 Season of Star Trek: Starfleet Academy
-And the Section 31 movie (the less said about this monstrosity, the better!)

Pretty impressive for the sake of statistics, but the quality varies wildly, hopefully unlike our own! XD

In Conclusion:

If you made it this far, Congratulations!

In parting, I just wanted to say that the Myogi's future is in good hands right now, and it looks promising! I still have so much in store for this game for the Iconian War, and beyond! There's bound to be some major changes down the road, as any long-running sim goes through, but I hope you will stick around to see it to fruition. Already, the specters of the future inhabit the present of our writing, and I look forward to revealing what they might be in due time.

So whether you've been with us for five months or five years, thank you. Thank you for being a part of this incredible journey! I hope you're as excited for what the future holds as I am.

Here's to Five Years of the USS Myogi, and here's to Five Years More!

Regards,

Captain Maho Takahashi
