Mission: The Next Myogi
Location: USS Myogi-A
Timeline: After 'Myogi: The Next Generation (Part 2)'

Previously, on Star Trek: Myogi:

She looked to Minerva. "Doctor, what is the baby's current presentation? Depending on your scans, there might be some positions that would be better than others. For moving things along and keeping the Captain more comfortable. Maybe we can get her to a space for now where we can lower the lights a bit and offer a bit more privacy?"

"I believe a walk around sickbay wouldn't hurt at all." Minerva pointed out, which was what she'd said a couple minutes before, but shrugged. These were people who cared about their Captain and she'd be willing to repeat several times. "If your Captain goes into frank labor, we'll have her right here and back in this room in a matter of seconds. There is no danger in the slightest."

And now, the continuation:

Bree was glad she and Minerva appeared to be on the same page thus far. Scott was not going to add to Maho's stress by contradicting Zephryrin, Bree simply felt an obligation to help Maho use as many of the tools she had practiced as possible to provide her with as much of a sense of predictability and calm as possible. "I'll be with you, Captain, and you can lean on me as much as you need to breathe and sway just like you practiced. I can even offer the back massage we talked about if you like."

"And I'll be on the other side," Minerva pointed out, "Just relax and as she said, breath and sway." She reached out to support Maho as she slid off the bed, "And let me regale you with all of the benefits that Myogi has to offer. For example, now that this bed has been synced to your biometrics, until we reset it, it will monitor your vitals and sound alerts so long as you're within it's sensor range, which extends throughout the sickbay. We can even cast it to other displays throughout sickbay if we need to."

"That's impressive." Maho commented. "That technology was brand new on the Odyssey class. Great to see it's been implemented fleetwide, especially on a dinky little... Uh, forgive me for asking, but what class is this ship exactly?"

"They call it the Lafayette class destroyer:" Came a response in Ryosuke's voice.

Ryosuke had arrived back in sickbay with his XO in tow just in time to catch Maho's question.

"It's the leanest, meanest Iconian killing machine." Ryosuke continued to elaborate. "We actually have a running tally among the class of how quickly we can turn a Herald ship into cottage cheese."

"Lafayette class, huh?" Maho asked as another contraction hit. "Nice touch." She continued once it had passed.

"Lafayette?" Ichika remarked, stealing a curious glance at Maho. "If you don't mind my asking, Captain, what's the significance behind the term?"

"Like its New Orleans class predecessor, the Lafayette class derives its name from a city in Louisiana." Ryosuke explained. "This is evident in the initial production batch of ships: Our sister ship, the Baton Rouge, is also named for a city in Louisiana."

"And something else that Louisiana is known for is some good Cajun midwives." Minerva gave a smile as the most recent set of readings updated on the nearest console that they were passing, "Which is relevant because you're now dilated to ten centimeters, Captain, and whether you're ready or not in your head, I think we're about to meet the newest Takahashi in the next few minutes or so."

"I think you're right..." Maho muttered as she felt pain in her pelvis rapidly intensifying. "HOLY CRAP, YOU'RE RIGHT!"

Wrapping one hand around Maho's back for extra support, Bree asked, "Feeling that pushing urge, Captain?" Bree knew that full dilation didn't always mean the baby was low enough in the pelvis to make pushing efficient, but gravity was magical for progressing labor. "If so, you tell us what position feels right and we'll follow your lead."

"I think it'd be best to try and get me back to the biobed..." Maho grunted. "Before I start pushing... Here and now..."

Minerva put one of her arms around Maho's back right with Bree's, then her other one on the back of her thighs, "Counselor, if you would, or someone else?" She waited a moment for assistance and then began to lift the Captain to move her back the way they'd come. It was a matter of about twenty seconds before they had Maho back on the bed and Minerva had taken another thirty to scrub her hands once more and sterilize them before moving to the end of the bed and glancing over the vitals once more, "Everything's looking good, Maho, let's focus on your breathing and let's time your pushing with the contractions, sound good?"

"Okay..." Maho panted. "I think another one's about to start..."

"All right." Minerva gave a rapid glance around the room at the others, "As you start feeling the contraction begin, I want you to push, hard." She kept a smile on her face the entire time, warm but not forced, "Push until the contraction stops, then breathe again." She had her hands under the privacy drape and kept glancing below and above, making sure she knew what was going on at all times everywhere. She saw the other woman tensing, "And push."

Maho pushed as hard as she could, as instructed. She could feel the baby's head begin to crown, and got to the ears before the contraction stopped.

"I think that was the head." Maho commented.

"We've got a forehead," Ichika reported, stealing a peek through the privacy drape. "Kinda hard to tell, though, there's a lot of blood coming out..."

"Commander, I know you're fascinated with our biology, but now is not the time to be looking." Keisuke placed a hand on Ichika's shoulder.

"I wasn't-!"

Ichika's face flushed red with embarrassment upon the realization that she'd invaded Maho's private bubble. "...Right. Soooo... if you'll excuse me for a moment..."

And with that, she stepped out of the room.

"And some perineal lacerating is perfectly normal in this situation." Minerva said, one hand already underneath the child's head for support.

"Oh, god... I think there's another one coming!" Maho announced.

"This is going to be the big one, Maho," Minerva restated, "I need you to breathe and then a really big push and we should be all set, you've gotten the hard part done already."

Maho sucked in a big breath and pushed as hard as she could. Once the head and the shoulders had cleared, the rest slid out as easy as pooping. Though, Maho was fairly certain an actual turd might have left at around the same time.

When the newborn baby began to cry, Maho knew that she had done it. A little earlier than she would have liked, but she had done it.

No matter the circumstances or how many times Bree had witnessed birth, it never ceased to amaze her, not simply because newborns were adorable or because they represented a new beginning, but because birth was a time when mothers to be demonstrated physical and emotional strength and resilience they sometimes didn't even know they possessed. Maho was a formidable woman already, of course, but with new experiences came confidence in areas never thought of before.

Then there was of course the joy of seeing the amazement in Kewisuke's eyes. The transformation of men and women into parents was truly a magical one, and Scott found herself on the verge of happy tears that spilled over freely upon hearing the little one's first cry.

It was a matter of moments for Minerva to clamp and then cut the umbilical cord before retreating from the privacy of the drape with the infant cradled in her arms and stepped around with a glance at the vitals for both of her patients, broad smile on her face as she held the squalling baby, "Congratulations Captain, let me introduce you to your daughter." She brought the baby over to Maho to hand her over.

"Oh, Keisuke..." Maho sighed as she took her daughter into her hands for the first time. "She's beautiful..."

"She sure is..." Keisuke replied.

So, this is what Zack told me about: He added mentally. What it really feels like to become a father: He sure was right about one thing; the feeling really can't be put into words...

Minerva grinned at the Captain, "I'll be back in just a minute, just need to clean you up a bit while you get to know one another."

Bree understood the importance of giving Maho and Keisuke time to bond with their daughter in a calm, peaceful environment with limited interruptions, if they could be avoided. Referred to as the "golden hour" amongst medical professionals who routinely oversaw births, research showed that encouraging things like skin to skin contact and breast feeding as soon as possible while avoiding separating mother and child unnecessarily, promoted bonding, healthy latching, and helped the baby regulate her own vitals, all of which was essential for current and future health.

"Congratulations to you both," Bree offered, gently squeezing Maho's shoulder. "I'll be close by too if you need anything."

Scott stepped away, but also kept a close eye on everyone's readouts. To Minerva, she quietly offered, "Great job, doc."
